Probably they don't use DPP. It's close to my last choice.

The majority have been using jpegs (and said so), and others have been using th latest ACR - which doesn't have this issue. One reviewer of a prerelease model explicitly stated that canon had no raw converter at that time, so I think it is forgivable

Canon is working the fix the issue with DPP 3.11.10 and 5D3. This version has now been pulled from Canon websites

DPP 3.11.10 and 5D3

Many thanks to Rudy Winston at Canon ITCG for reviewing my samples and forwarding this to Japan!

If you are in contact with Rudy, you might mention to him that USM is not nearly as sharp as the old straight sharpening slider. I was surprised at the difference.

Gene,

You can use "sharpness" instead of USM. What I do is I switch to sharpness from USM in the RAW tab and set it to 3. It gives very crisp output.

Arash,

Yes, I'm aware, but isn't it either or? I'm just saying if you switch as you suggested, sharpness is much better. But shouldn't USM provide a sharper output or as sharp if tuned properly? It doesn't as I see it and I would think it should.

There are two "sharpness" sliders, one in the RAW tab and in the RGB tab. The earlier is applied during demosaic and results in the best output, the other is just an output sharpening like USM with a fine radius. The new USM in the RAW tab just replicates in-camera sharpening, it is rather coarse and crude.

So you still have two choices, either turn off RAW sharpening all together and use the "sharpness" slider in the RGB tab or just use the sharpness in the "RAW" tab.

Thanks for the explanation. I was using it the wrong way.
