My last relatively large purchase through craigslist (3 Line New MF Nikkor lenses for just under $1,100) was completed INSIDE a branch of U.S. Bank where I have an account. I had NO extra cash with me, simply my checkbook. The staff was a bit curious when I staked out a place with a couple of chairs, but I explained what I was up to and they had no problem. The fellow arrived, opened his bag to show me five pristine lenses, of which I bought three. We agreed on final price and I went to the cashier to cash a check. The seller was happy and I was delighted. I drove thirty miles but I would have gone much farther for those lenses...

Opens bag with 5 pristine lenses, security guard yells 'grenade' and flies into a tackle?
Have had TSA staff ask me if those were tear gas canisters.... another thought cans of beer

I have been having horrible luck checking out CL listings. My son needed a car, and the people lie constantly about the car's condition. In fact, one didn't even own the car - it was his girl friends car - and she didn't want to sell it. Another, the guy didn't even have the title...just some crazy story about how to get one from the state. I went and checked out a what sounded like a great deal on lenses, body, bag....the whole nine yards. The equipment was so badly abused, covered in dirt, dust, and grease...missing screws...lens coatings that had crackled like old paint due to high heat...missing screws etc...I just walked away. But, we did meet in a bank parking lot.
Be careful!
Well unfortunately I was late by maybe 30min tops. Seller agreed to meet with me and first buyer at the time just to see if he would show up at all - kind of nice of him and it was at bank too . I did check out lens and man this thing was as real as it could have been, Super MINT condition and not a little dust particle inside - to good to be true you would say !!
While we were waiting for first buyer I had time to play around with this monster - wow. At some point I looked at watch and noticed that we been waiting for 15min so I said guess he is not coming But just out of nowhere this guy shows up and well done deal ........
It was the most heart breaking deal for me this year so far Bottom line you snooze you loose

So, what happened? The price is way cheap but this lens is way good! Been using one for a couple of years now.
Should have just paid him $100 over his asking price and got the hell out of there before the first buyer arrived. First buyer would have thought it was a scam and gone about his day never knowing it was real.
I tried that mate - offered him 250 but he kept saying lets wait for other guy
