Shouldn't have looked at the Summicron-M 28 ASPH MTF. Lawdy. Perfect balance of great wide open performance and edge to edge sharpness for landscapes stopped down. Wish Zeiss would build some 135mm format lenses to this price point so I could buy a no compromise 28mm lens and be done with it There's always Leica though, the 28 Summicron ASPH seems like a lens thats worth saving up for and using for life.

I would love to have leica M and after selling all my 28ths I could afford the elmarit ASPH. But it would still not be the best (summicron) and I would be afraid to carry it around (I had in past bought 85L II as my only cherished lens and never felt comfortable shooting in London at night ).
My Elmarit-M ASPH is superior to the Summicron in several ways, if that helps your decision. While Leica rarely gives away product, they made an exception for the Elmarit to spur sales of the original M8. I found the following qualities irresistible: price, size, DOF scale design, low linear distortion, E39 accessories. The 'cron is superior in certain ways optically, but not enough to justify a purchase, IMHO. With London now a poster child for civil mayhem, you may still want a detachment of Life Guards for your photo outings and, alternatively, a cheaper lens like the M-Rokkor 28/2.8 - preferably with white spots.
