50mm F2 Nikkor-K....the one that looks like the later AI/AIS version but without the AI aperture ring...@ 2.8 it's every bit the match for the nifty50, and sells for under $50....

I converted one and tried it. Meh. It was OK, but I was too distracted/obsessed with the 1.2 at the time.

the MC PG 50/1.4 is much better than the 58/1.4, but much harder to convert as well.

Zuikos 28/3.5, 50/1.8 MiJ, 135/3.5 - all for $100 if you have patience.
SuperTak 50/1.4 also.

Sure. And the 1.4, too. I converted one to EF. It is excellent.

For me, lenses that were cheap and totally worth the money:

Vivitar (Komine) 28/2
Canon FD 50/3.5 macro (worked very well on a APS-C camera)
Tokina 90/2.5 macro (best bokeh available)
CZJ Pancolar 50/1.8 (very sharp stopped down, nice rendering, also good for close-ups and on tubes)

I also have to second the suggestion about the Contax 28/2.8 (MM). I think it's probably the best 28mm you can get without spending 5-10 times more. Many of the Contax lenses are in the sweet spot for price/performance for me. I've lost all interest for "thrifty" lenses because of Contax/Zeiss, so that is a danger. But I'm happy that I don't feel the need to look for something better anymore.

Funny you mention the Vivitar (Komine) 28/2 Close-Focus, Aham.

I just had mine completely stripped down for a good cleaning (fungus) the other day and testing it out reminded me how unique and fun it really is. It is a very easy lens to work on, too.

really? how the f**k do you get the back of the lens apart? i can get the flange off with a screw driver (and rear element with a spanner), but i can't figure out how to get the base off, aperture ring, and associated rear workings. note: i have the minolta md version, so perhaps things work differently than on yours, which i believe is FD?

If you look at FL lenses (rather than FD) there are some screaming deals out there. I think an 85mm f/1.8 sells for about $135 on KEH.

Yes, mine is (was) FD. I JB Welded the EOS mount on as a final conversion stage, so I have to go in from the front. A good hard twist of the front (interior) portion of the barrel and then the entire thing spins off, including the "name ring". Once that is off, the entire optical assembly comes out in one piece, straight out the front. The barrel/helicoid is literally just a shell with moving parts.

Once you get the guts out, it is just a matter of twisting the front and rear groups out of the main interior assembly. Then you have full access to the aperture blades and you can disassemble both the front and rear groups to their individual components for cleaning. I recommend doing the front and rear groups separately and be very careful about keeping the parts in order and facing the right direction. You may be tempted to turn the lens over and let gravity help you, but you could end up with a handful of shuffled components very quickly. .

Sebboh,
If I remember correctly there are 3 tiny screws on the ring (where you have the distance marker).
After Unscrewing these 3 crews, you should be able to lift the whole base up.
You can also go from the front like Cogitech.

hmm, neither of those suggestions is working. the front barrel is not showing any signs of spinning off (counter clockwise i assume) and i don't really want to take the vicegrips to it. i removed the three set screws in the distance scale ring (as i've tried before) in addition to removing the flange and the distance scale ring now rotates freely, but neither the base, the aperture ring, nor the distance scale show any signs of wanting to come off. perhaps it's got gritty gunk in it somewhere making it more difficult?

hmm I might have been wrong here, Sebboh. I recalled one of those vivitars has to go from the front and thought that was the Vivitar28/1.9. Perhaps this one needs to go from the front as well. I'll check mine after I get home tonight and let you know.

Sebboh,
Sorry that was the instruction for another lens. I've just checked. This 28/2 CF has to be done from the front, similar to the Vivitar S1 28/1.9.
To make up, I have just created a video taking the whole group out from the front, same as Cogitech described. Here it is:

thanks a ton both of you guys! i guess i'll have to break out the rubber gripper tool to get the barrel off.

edit: sorry to the OP for the long detour too.

I was going to make a video, but you have saved me the trouble. Very nicely done.
