I'm not sure how wide is wider. As you probably know, some of the M mount wides have some magenta color shift on the NEX 7, but I think that issue is over rated if you're willing to process with Cornerfix or do a lens correction profile in Capture One 6.
I think any photo enthusiast coming to the NEX system has to consider the ZA 24/1.8. With that lens you will also get the benefit of AF when you want it. The Sony 50/1.8 OSS is probably a great lens for the money and you also have image stabilization which can come in handy at time.
I don't know if you've seen Bjorn Utpott's blog - link here:
He is using a NEX 7 and almost exclusively uses the ZA 24 and a ZM 50/1.5 Sonnar. You might want to peruse his photos.
I like a really compact system and have been traveling with a ZM 35/2.8 and CV 75/2.5. For 50's I have been using a ZM Planar and Summicron, both of which are fantastic and lately for photos of my new baby I've been using my NEX 7 with my Pentax 77/1.8 which is a surprisingly compact package with better close focus than M mount lenses. Really, there are so many fantastic options with the NEX that's it's hard to know where to start. People have been very happy with the reasonably priced Sigma 19 and 30 in NEX mount. With those lenses you get AF, but some have said they lack some of the microcontrast and pop that a lot of the rangefinder lenses have.
Edit: I forgot to mention that many people are using the Hawk's helicoid adapter to deal with the close focus issues of RF lenses on the NEX
Sorry to change topics - anyone else have some issues with the control wheel on their 5N? Mine seems jumpy sometimes, when changing aperture. I tried to blow it out with canned air, and it's better, but still a little bit wiggy.

Mine is a bit stiff and hard turn now at first. After I push down hard to turn it, it seems to be ok and turns normally and smoothly. However, I always encounter this after not using the camera for several days.
Greggf, also consider the Contax G 45mm f2.0. It's a fantastic lens for the price though manual focus is a bit harder with it since you have to use an adapter to focus.
For a wide lens, I would consider the Sigma 19mm f2.8 over the Sony's native 16mm f2.8 as I have heard it does better on the corners. Rumors on the Sony Alpha Rumors website currently indicate that Sony's wide angle zoom will be 10-18mm f4.0 with optical image stabilization (OSS) so it might make a good ultra-wide option. Unfortunately, it probably won't be available for your trip next month.

I would rather go by a Nokton 50 1.5 rather than the G lens.. its faster and have a real focus ring. Subjectively speaking of course..
How's the bokeh on the Nokton 50 1.5? The primary weak points to me of the Contax G45 is mainly it's bokeh and it's harder to use since you have use the small focus ring on the adapter to focus.
Thank you everyone for the input! I do have a Nikon 50 1.2ais that I will be using on the 7. While not quite as small as the contax 50 1.7, it is pretty small. But, it is sharp as nails!! Almost as sharp as my 50L wide open, but stopped down it is hard to beat!! I will also lok into the sigma 19... Looks like a good wide option.
I wil take more advice, too, please!!
Thanks very much,
Gregg

Another thing to consider is that there is quite a bit more opportunity for purple fringing with the Nokton 50/1.5 compared to the Contax, although the new LR4 controls would help with that. Also, when I had both lenses, I found the Contax to be sharper corner to corner, if that matters to you.
Just got my NEX 7 in the mail.Need a little help.It will not let me shoot with a MF lens on it.What is the secret button to push? Thanks in advance

1. Is there a way to remove the ISO setting in turning wheel on the back? I keep finding it get changed during walk around.
2. How you deal with EVf turn on by itself when not in use the camera but hang it on your chest?
3. For top left dial, can I reset it to something else instead of aperture?

Regards.
1) hold down unlabeled button next to the shutter for three seconds to lock the iso wheel.
2) i never hang any of my cameras from any kind of strap. it's still super annoying there should be a manual evf/lcd switch on the camera. i often have the evf activate when i shoot from the waist.
3) only by changing shooting mode (e.g. it controls shutter speed in S mode).
I will try #1.
Have to turn off the camera to deal with #2 as my hand usually full when out with family
#3 is kind of disappointed as I wish I can program other things instead of go into manual.
4. Is there a easy way to format card instead of going deep into manual?

Not that I know of, but if you never use the Settings menu for anything else, it will always default to that, so it's really just a couple of clicks away.

I guess I need more time familiar with it, I get lost to find it and there is too many option in setup. My D700/800 is two button click and Leica M9's setup is very easy and clean with not much option. With those, the first thing I put a card in, I format it.
5. Peaking: I find with my 50mm 1.4 at WO, peak is very easy and results are very good, but once stop down, focus will be difficult. the same thing happen to my 35mm f2 lens, even WO, I have hard time to nail the focus? (I almost always use EVF, and peaking level set to high.) What you guys do with lens stop down manual shooting?
