i only use format and peaking color (i like to use red for b&w mode and white for color mode), as i said the mode dial can easily be mapped to a button.
I hope Sony makes a few changes in the firmware for the next NEX bodies. It would be nice to see some progress in that area too.
One 'feature' that has always annoyed me is how my mapped buttons dont work the same in every mode. I can see maybe needing to change them in some circumstances but the way it's handled now is sort of... nonsense.
Also focus peaking on/off would be a welcomed addition to button customization, as well as changing the video button to something else (or even disabling it).
Uh-Oh, OMD arrives and so does the Panny 25/1.4. Did some shooting on P, A, S modes including some street. I can't believe how fast that AF and accurate too. Lot's of customization/configuration possibilities with this cam. Of course, I'm just getting started and while this is a NEX thread, some of you wanted to know (At least, I took the image with the NEX-7!). I posted some first shots on the OMD thread. My enthusiasm is at the "new camera high" but this looks to be a fun camera. Cute little bugger too!

Just poked around, decided to assign Shoot Mode to Button C, the right button I use for FEC
I set mine up the same but I assigned Shoot Mode to Button B

One thing that bugged be is that EC direction isn't consistent, normally you rotate the right Tri-Navi dial to the right to increase EC(in A mode), but when you push the down button to bring up the EC screen you now have to turn the dial the opposite way.
I have a small bug I think, when I press the playback button to review an image, sometimes the picture pops up for a second and returns to live-view, then I have to press it again, anyone else have this behavior?
Ah, yes I saw your pictures..quite lovely by the way. So, is the AF up to the task when shooting people walking towards you? I didn't have a chance to test that one..
What are your impressions regarding general IQ over the 5N?

In my very limited testing, the AF appears to be very well suited to street including people walking toward you. The AF is so quick you can practically hold down the shutter letting it find focus and take the picture. There is no delay, at least on a bright summer's day.
I decided to but a series of 'impressions' of the OM-D and NEX-7 on my blog. You won't see a lot of technical stuff but more of my practical experiences with both cameras, at least, how I personally feel about using both. Making a decisions between one or the other is going to be difficult.

I think the best succinct summary of the differences between these two cameras came from Sebboh in another thread. To paraphrase what I remember he said, the NEX is best for manual focus with adapted lenses and the OM-D is best for autofocus of native mount lenses. I think all the other differences between these two cameras are minor compared to this main distinction.

As I've only used the OM-D for a short time, I tend to agree with you and Sebboh!

True but its hard when you are raised in the FM alt forum where pixel perfection becomes the ultimate goal
Anyways, do you find the distance marks on M lenses to be accurate when used on the NEX? I think its a little off
It is no biggie. Just pick the most common 2 or 3 distances that you'd normally use, put the lens on a tripod, get a tape measure, and measure out those distances. All of my M lenses are a little off, but you can just remember how off they are, or you can use a little piece of tape to indicate the correct distance on the lens.
Either way, it is still silly that my NEX-7 doesn't provide some kind of focus scale info for its native lenses, as it makes true street photography difficult. It is very useful on my X100, although the Fuji's DOF indicator is very conservative. With the Sony, I have to AF on the something like the ground at the approximate distance that I'd like to zone focus.

4:3 is an underrated aspect ratio. 6X7 is one of my favorites, too bad there's no digital option, unless through cropping.
For whatever reason, I usually print in a 3:2 or square ratio and when I had my GF-1, I was always cropping. Now that may just be me, but I never got comfortable with 4:3.

A question I have for you is do you find that you have a preference for taking photos with a 3:2 ratio as compared to the 4:3 ratio or vice versa??
I have no preference at this point and find I can easily adapt from one format/camera to another. In fact, I've hardly noticed much change in my compositional approach.
I'm having a quick question to those of you who have the NEX 5N and the EVF : somehow I do not get the focus peaking in the EVF. Is there a trick to have this feature in the EVF also ? The EVF is by itself a very helpful aid, I find it better than the LCD but I was hoping to use it with the focus peaking.
Really? I didn't do anything special. If you have the focus peaking activated, it should work both in the LCD and the EVF.
Maybe you need to change its colour or its intensity, I don't know…
I find it much more difficult to see the focus peaking in EVF whereas it is very prominent on the LCD, I don't know how it could be but I have always noticed it to be so.

pixels are smaller on the evf as a percentage of the total image than they are on the lcd. this means the relative size of the peaking region is also smaller.
