p.3 #1 · What is your WHY?

RichardLavigne wrote:
It's true that this approach will not win over everybody, look at Apple for example. They have rabid fans.... but they also have rabid enemies.

But it goes even beyond that. If you compare people that buy Apple to those that buy PC - it's like 10% of users (not sure of the exact numbers). But, that 10% are FANATICS, almost evangelical. The 90% of PC users are simply users.

The question is - how will "why I do what I do" show in my work that will create Inku Photography fanatics that will go and preach Inku Photography to every potential bride?

I think I see your point now, we are talking here of the very fundamental "why". We tend to forget about putting why in a first place- even though we know what it is. You made me think today

for everyone who wrote their "why" here, I think a more important question is how does your why actually effects your style of photography?

I've been seeing a lot of posts lately, asking for opinions on websites, logos, to blog or not to blog etc... and I think they all come back to one point.

What is your why? simple enough... why is it, that you do this?

Is it even important to have a why?

As business people, these are questions that are important... they define why we make the decisions we do and in what direction we want to run our company. But to us, they are actually more important. We are not just business people, we are artists. Our business is defined by the

how does this change actually effects your photography? what are you doing now that you weren't doing before? I mean physically not emotionally.

i think this is very important for me. i'm not sure that its always necessary for photographers who make stunning images, however, when photographers images illustrate their 'why', a congruent easy to read message is created throughout the brand.

I don't think it has profoundly effected our actual photography, because I think we've always shot to tell the story, to look for moments.... I think it has effected the way we present our photography, both on our website and when I meet with couples. It has helped me to define what is important to us and more clearly illustrate to our couples and families, why it should be important to them.

p.3 #8 · What is your WHY?

I do think a few people have perhaps misinterpreted the point behind the Sinek talk, and it is worth reading the whole book to actually understand the root of the point he is making. The problem with most people's "why" is that it is self-focused and not expressed in terms of value to a client. No one pays you to love photography, nor should they. For many businesses the "why" informs the authentic ability and unique position that business has to execute on that which they stand for. As such it will have varying degrees of significance to each business (see: Spencer B). But if we are talking about the "why" as a client-facing piece of our marketing profil it needs to be presented in the form of an argument. I stand for X, I stand for it because I have experienced Y, and it necessitates the creation of Z - or something like that.

I feel I must reiterate that for the "why" to be useful it has to be expressed in terms of benefit to the client.

Thank you Todd... I think its a hard concept to grasp.. so reiterating it as many as possible is probably a good thing.

Yes, it's difficult to grasp and difficult to translate into action in terms of crafting your image toward potential clients.

I might also add that having a clue about your "why" will help tremendously when you make decisions about what to sell to your clients, how you handle your presentations to them, how you answer their questions. Mainly because knowing a little bit about your why means you know yourself. I mean we are not company men/women. We are artists (and yes business people) and if you only compete on product and price you are fighting a losing battle.

I would argue that as Apple reaches past its 10 percent of the market place it is losing its why and eventually some company may come along to unseat them. Apple's original why - see the world differently - doesn't work as it becomes such a behemoth. Now it seems to be doing business just like everyone else, but then that is another story. Their why of the past has made them what they are today - think differently.

Why is important if for no other reason to help you look and feel different from your competition. Richards why is a takeaway for a potential client. Why? Because if a couple has met several photographers, the one thing a bride will absolutely remember about him is his story. That is worth it's weight in gold.

p.3 #13 · What is your WHY?

The whole reason I started down this path wasnt because I love photography. I mean I do, but I can take pictures of family and friends with a point and shoot and be just as happy. My reason for starting this journey began when I seen the website for "Now I lay me down to sleep" for the first time. While those pictures may be morbid to some, they were outstandingly beautiful to me and I want to be good enough to give a family that kind of amazing photography that they can treasure forever. Maybe its the Mama in me that turns to mush at the sight of a baby, but I know that if I were in those shoes I would want the pictures that I could look at later, so that I would always remember the face of my angel... So I gues my why is because I have loved and lost and I realized that life is fleeting and even if you have the best memories, you still forget the face of that person as time passses. With photography you will always have a way to look back and remember...

p.3 #15 · What is your WHY?

Because as a kid, getting a roll of film developed made me crazy. And I still get excited, and sometimes nervous, when I pick up a camera.

I searched high and low for years. I'd always needed an outlet for my art, but after trying everything from sculpting to painting to sketching, I realized I suck. I suck at singing, and can't learn music. And I can't dance worth my life - I look like an epileptic on the dance floor mid-seizure.

But when I picked up a camera, I felt at home. My first camera, I still have - A Kodak P&S digital camera. 4.1mp of pure glory and a 256mb SD card. It's broken, barely turns on, and it's filled with sand and all sort of junk. But I still have it. I smile when I find it in the back of my closet. I took some horrible pictures with it, and I loved it.

I've always had a passion for meeting new people, and building a relationship with them and, if possible, creating something to make them happy for a lifetime.

And because I get to do this with our AWESOME clients. I never get tired of working because, as I've found out, if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.

I never had a full respect for wedding photography until my wife and I got married, she pushed for amazing photographers, and I caved. And I am so very, very glad I did.

Kudos to my pushy, stubborn wife.

p.3 #16 · What is your WHY?

It started off as a hobby over 20 years ago. Then I second shot a wedding and found it to be such a rush/challenge. Then I shot a Sweet16 and the mom cried when I delivered the prints. Then I realized I had a gift of sorts, does that sound egotistical? It wasn't meant to be. It took me a while to realize because I was too busy working for The Man and making their stock price go up pennies at a time with my work. In the end, The Man didn't value my contribution anymore. In the end, I wanted to make a couple's day by taking my knowledge/skills and create something with it.... one couple at a time, not one shareholder at a time.

Now I'm beginning a new journey.

So many of you talking about kids and family as your WHY... I don't understand how that is your client-facing WHY.

You know what, some people steal food for their kids because you have to do what you have to do. Having little ones to support is not the reason anyone hires you.

This is way, way, way off-topic, but showcasing your studio manager is awesome.

Reading through this tread, one very striking thing is that the majority of "Why's" are very similar..

Just an observation
