those who have changed their orders from the D4 to the D800 or the other way around have shown they have little ability to conceptualize the difference between the 2 bodies and their functionality and capabilities.

There was a month between announcements, could be the D4 to D800 were holding a place in line while waiting to see the actual specs of the next body, then making their decision based on what was available.
I can only wonder how many D800's will be on B&S after a couple 4 or 5 months, as some discover it's not a good fit for them.
I have ordered a D800 and I am very exited about it. How ever if I had the money I would consider the D4 for the high iso.
The cameras are really different enough that those who can afford it will want both.
I would bet Nikon will eventually offer a camera between the D800 and the D4, I think the price gap from $3,000 to $6,000 is to large.
i didnt preordered the d800 coz its overkill for my purpose (lol here i am again) but ill wait for the real world test from you guys and ill decide if i want one
I have all three on order - a D4, and both D800 body versions (yeah, I might end up selling the version I don't use - or it may just be a backup). The D4 is my nighttime landscape / high speed wildlife / low light wildlife cam, the D800(s) will be for landscape and "normal" wildlife shots.
I have the d4/d800 on order... both are slated to ship around march 20th....
I'm still torn on which one to keep... The d800 appeals to me because of its higher mpx count for macro/landscape/portraiture while the d4's lowlight and speed really appeal to me.
I wish I could keep both models but my wallet/bank account says otherwise...
I expect to purchase a D4 sometime later this year, though I am watching/waiting patiently to see if Nikon has anything else up their proverbial sleeve before I take the plunge. I am looking forward to reading more "hands-on" reviews of both of these cameras, but expect that the D4 fits my needs better (high ISO, fast autofocus, high fps as my priorities in a new body).
I put a $500 deposit on a "D700 replacement" back in October at a local shop. Nikon always seems to deliver a couple of "whatever" is brand new to this shop before they are available through other sources online so being first on their list seemed prudent.
Of course, at that time I had no idea that it would be a 36MP body. That I neither need nor want.
Through rumors on this site I was able to see the announcement for the D4 and was able to call the local shop before anybody else and solidified my pre-order to a D4.
The resolution, dynamic range, and frame rate where more what I was looking for in a D700 replacement. Of course the D4 was double the price which wasn't what I was looking for. Still, it seemed like a good idea to remain #1 on the waiting list and I could always change my mind when the camera arrived or change my mind if a D800 arrived that would suit my needs and be half the price.
Along came the D800 and so I guess I need to spend double to get what I really want, which the D4 has.
Now, if the D800 would have come out with the same sensor as the D4, in a smaller body, without some other features like video, then I would have jumped.
Who knows, maybe Nikon will make a D700s with a D4 sensor? Not holding my breath though.
