p.5 #1 · Why I am not switching back to Nikon.. or did I ever leave?

He should have a photo of himself with just his face showing....in a dumpster covered with garbage. But seriously, I read about 1/4 of the post and couldn't figure out what the f#$k was trying to be said that couldn't be said in a simple paragraph without all the self portraits. Movin' on.

Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

Life is short; a very brief flicker of light in eternity and then it's gone. Therefore, isn't it better, in this short space of time we have, to be kind and decent to our fellow man, rather than being sarcastic and rude? It's completely unnecessary.

Too much narcissism, too little to read and learn from.

p.5 #5 · Why I am not switching back to Nikon.. or did I ever leave?

Thanks to everyone that has taking the time to comment. It's great that some are getting something out of it. While other's..not so much.

I do really appreciacte the comments about my older work with film being better. That inspires me to be a better photographer. However, I must say much of recent film has yet to be seen.
But in saying that, I can honestly say that if one is really interesting in learning ang growing as a photographer/artist . One must sometimes take a few steps back inorder to go forward.

The idea of steady progrssion when taking chances learning new tools/systems without "any" hicups along the way isnt realistic. And fearing not being as good as you once where, can hold you back.

And the fact is every camera system out there has it's strength and weekness, for any given photographer, at an given time.

Call me crazy, but I like to get out of a system right when reach a platea of sorts.

Iv done the same in my Martial Arts journy while maintaining my foundation in the basic. There is always something to learn.

Right now I am happy using my Rollie and my Canon system. I am looking forward to getting a 1Dx in the near future. Really missing the having a full frame body with a decent motor drive and awsome high ISO.

In many ways the Nikon D3s sets the bar for DSLR. And I for one am excited for Nikon users with the up coming D4. It should be awsome.

And if this thread does anything, I hope other's are inspired to try other camera's/ other systems. Just to expand there experience as photographer's.

Gregory very nice diversity of shots and camera equipment. I must say I am really impressed with the first shot with the M3. It captured my attention right off the start and each time I look at it I find my eyes finding more things to discover in the picture.

Some disgraceful posts here. Nothing the OP said warranted these.

Wish the OP the best in his photographic journey, irrespective of the gear.

Gregory, I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts here and over at Nikon Café. You are clearly very passionate about photography as a form of art and expression. Your images have a certain 'substance' to them- they're not just pictures - they tell a story, communicate a feeling or at the very least force the viewer to ask questions or think about context.

Ignore the naysayers and those who critique your spelling or punctuation. Your strongest medium of communication is visual and regardless of whether you choose film, digital, Leica, Nikon, Canon or whatever, it's a medium in which you excel.

I find the posting of the discarded Tim Horton's wrapper stuck in mud rather intriguing. In a way it is reflective of the broader impact man has had on this planet...reminds me of Edward Burtynsky's series on oil. If anyone is interested:

Keep shooting!

I honestly am not getting why there is a big deal about switching from one brand to another, or whatever. I honestly think that pretty much all the shots above could have been made by any camera system. I'll go so far as to say that most of the above shots could have been done quite effectively with my 1932 Voigtlander Bergheil with 105mm Heliar lens for that matter. I'm not getting that the camera gear itself makes much difference at all.

Reminds me of this story:

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?" The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

I commend you for feeding the good wolf

I think the antagonism is that this comes off as an anti nikon post in a nikon forum. Some people will use personal attacks (the op pics of himself) when they don't use a logical argument. That being said, what did the OP think would be the response and is he surprised by how many pages this has gone on. I personally really don't care that he switched or won't come back or want to know any reasons why people switch systems, it has nothing to do with making me a better photographer.

Because cameras are like cars. Everyone knows that if you change your car you will not only be a better driver, but also instead of being stuck in traffic you'll have pleasant open roads in front of you. We know this because that's what the advertising shows!

I've switched brands a couple of times. Use the tool you like using the most and be happy. If you find yourself in a rut and a new tool brings new inspiration then why not use it?

Agreed. Sometimes the emotion of using a particular tool (or driving a certain vehicle in keeping with the analogy) cannot be quantified with dollars and cents. Sometimes it just makes sense even if it can't be explained.

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen such ridiculous responses. Dude posts his thoughts (and like thoughts they ramble, big deal), and people have conniptions.

I like many of the photos, many I don't, but I get that others may. But the need to insult tells way more about the insulters than the insultees.

Good luck in your journey, and I have no problem with trying out every piece of gear. I'm working on the same

But the OP didn't really switch much of anything, did he? He simply went from one DSLR system to another VERY similar one. Other than the name plates, what was new here? I too enjoy trying out new things. Last year in addition to my Nikon system I began shooting an 1880s Watson & Son half plate tailboard system. I bought some 19th century wooden plate holders, adapted them to shoot 4x5, and use the camera with lenses made around 1900 +/- 10 years (DAGOR, Tessar, Heliar, E&HT Anthony rapid rectilinear lenses in ancient Optimo or Compound shutters.) Now THAT is a real change, and the totally new workflow did impact the way I shoot. I'm just not getting how shooting the Canon version of very similar Nikon gear will do anything for you.
