To be fair, he said there are 6 lenses in existence. So, I'd imagine they'll all perform pretty similarly, and 6 isn't exactly a large sample to pick from. They are hand made and can only produce 10 a month due to the way they're manufacturing them. My guess is that their tolerances are very tight because they don't want this to be a bust.
hopefully they give the same attention to detail when production starts... its easy (relative) to spend a whole lot of time making 6 perfect samples compared to a larger scale production when they start selling them.

1) My hat off to SLR-magic if they managed to do it without all that exotic glass, floating elements and ASPH elements. A 0.95 Nocti actually costs more to produce than they sell them for. If SLR-Magic managed to do it at less than half the price and still kept a profit margin, then I'm really impressed.
They're using tantalum glass (I checked with wikipedia and this metal is really used in manufacturing high refractive index glass).

Remember that Samyang was once viewed as a piece of garbage company who only made ultra-cheapo lenses, and now, they are viewed as producing exceptionally good optical designs for a very reasonable price. Now people get really excited anytime a new Samyang prime is announced. This looks like they've done the optical magic, but unlike Samyang, they're also really focusing on build it seems....it'll be interesting to see how it holds up, but if it does, it's a good price for a lens of this quality.
Well said. Who knows, maybe we're witnessing a new star of the manual focus lens world being born.
Please note that I will be unable to afford this lens regardless, but I always love seeing new great lens designs.
Agreed. And with all the bucketloads of recent announcements, the lens universe is getting more and more interesting.
Perhaps you missed this bit...Quote: "The lens will be rangefinder coupled of course, and SLR Magic is also creating a CINE version without RF coupling for $2988, for use on NEX, Micro 4/3, etc".

Overpriced and over hyped from a company that has no track record?
I would definitely consider if it was closer to $2.5k to $3.2k. And knowing these Chinese companies, the markup on this lens is probably 1000000%? Companies like Leica and Zeiss have been around a long time.. but this one? and some of the parts are supposingly made in China too.
For $4k, you can't go wrong with the 50 Lux ASPH.

I was expecting $3000, so it's a tad over priced to me, but if the production samples are as good and if production only lasts a few years, I'd expect prices to climb to $6000.
It will be under $3000!...Quote: "The lens will be rangefinder coupled of course, and SLR Magic is also creating a CINE version without RF coupling for $2988, for use on NEX, Micro 4/3, etc".

Photography is getting more and more popular these years, but strangely the gear price is getting higher and higher. 4k for this lens is ridiculous.
It will be available for under 3k...Quote: "The lens will be rangefinder coupled of course, and SLR Magic is also creating a CINE version without RF coupling for $2988, for use on NEX, Micro 4/3, etc".
Price is "ouch". Tho I understand that with RF version, I guess tweaking focusing for 50mm f0.95 isnt exactly easy.. As far as I know, if you want your RF to match lens, usual solution is to send both to Leica and let them tweak it for you (and those tweaks usually works on aperture you select).
Cheaper non RF version seems like perfect m4/3 portrait lens. And perhaps even on NEX.
I'm not sure what is worse:
1) A company using SLR in their name selling a $4k+ lens for Rangefinders.
2) A company using SLR in their name selling a $3k lens for Mirrorless cameras
3) A company using 4+ crappy brand names to sell lenses.
However, good glass+good build quality is really all that matters.
