Maybe Canon read all the threads on this forum about "Just raise the rates if you want to increase sale" so they decided to jack up the price of admission for L.
I suspect the lens will sell well and be a very capable lens. But, others will prefer a couple of primes, such as the 35 1.4L or use the 24-105L IS or the regular 24-70L non-IS for half the price and crank up the ISO a stop. I suspect Canon will upgrade many of the lenses in the arsenal such as the 35 1.4L and upgrade the price as well. Touch economic times call for bigger sources of revenue.

Canon has dropped the ball again. They announce this garbage and a couple new wide angel "kit lenses" with IS (the 24 and 28). Not sure who their target market is with these lenses. I picked up the new 300 f/2.8L IS II last week and that may be Canons best lens to date but if the 1DX focusing system fails, it's Nikon time.

It does weigh less and is smaller. And the sharpness should rival the Nikon version. That's worth something.
The 70-200 mk2 is also $2100 so I'm not sure why people are shocked at the price. $2300 is might steep, but the quality of lenses they are pumping out is crazy high, so this will likely be a pretty amazing lens...considering it's probably been in the works for years.

Yep William, I'm not sure I'll be running out to grab one at that price it would need to be as sharp as a 35L .. but somehow I can't see it ever being so ...
£2300?
Well they can fuck right off, I paid £700 for my mkI brand new in 2008.

Trust you BK ... have to say tho, there aint a week goes by that I don't consider it ... if only I didn't have quite so much Kannun gear to swap over

Maybe it's just me, it probably is...but I don't think the overall quality is really getting better, in fact, I've never had so many issues as I have had in the last 7-10 years compared to the previous 10. Sure there are improvements, but quality? I can't get my 24-70's to behave on multiple camera bodies much less one. I've had mutliple 50 1.4's, they all sucked (my old 50 1.8 MK1 was sharper than them all). I removed the front filter on my 85L along with the whole internal lens barrel, that was nicel. Before digital and the new crop of lenses, I never had problems with front focus, back focus and general build issues...sure, todays photo gear has some great developments, but my photos aren't necessarily any "better" due to those advancements. I think that pumping out the gear at the rate they due has actually affected quality for the worse...
Can we start a new thread titled...'Camera manufacurers pricing is whack!'
I love my 24-70L but will not be thinking about changing it for the new one until either mine breaks (not likely,) or the price comes down to parity with the current version.
Cheers,
Nic
PS: Just beacuse a new version of a lens is announced/released, it doesn't mean that the old version we've been using for years is suddenly unable to perform any more.
I've been a pretty big Canon proponent, but it seems they are falling way behind in still photography compared to Nikon. All their efforts are going to the video market. To me, there's no way the new 24-70 is worth twice what I paid for the old one 3 years ago. How much is sharpness worth? Not that much to me. Also, Canon's really been neglecting their flash system. Is a new speedlite even on the drawing board, let alone and upgraded off camera system? I'm hoping the 5D mkIII will get me excited again, but I really think I'm going to be disappointed. Truthfully, I got a full Nikon kit spec'd out in a saved shopping cart from B&H, and it's becoming more and more tempting...
