Three years ago I got the version one - brand new for $1041 from my local dealer. I know a lot has happened in the last three years, but 2.2X the price? Seems too high.
I have preordered mine. The 24-70 has been a thorn in my side since the 1Ds2 came out, and the 1Ds3 didn't make things better. Given that it's one of the most used lenses in my bag, and given that I expected this price tag, I swallowed my pride and as soon as it appeared on B&H I pressed the button. With all the things that I'll be buying this year (1DX, 5D3, 24-70) I may have to sell the 400 DO, or some AAPL, but it's definitely worth it to me.

I got bitten by paying $2500 for the 70-200 mk II when it first came out. No way I fall for this one. Make it $1800 or lower and it will be in my bag.
Did it take 12 months or 18 months before the 70-200 IS II went down to $1900+? I agree won't bat an eye to it til it drops to $1800.
The site just went down for a few minutes. "couldn't connect to database. Too many connections.". I guess too many pre-ordering of this great lens It must be a real wannahave. Have EOSfun

Some of the hefty $2300 price is a result of the value of the US Dollar.
No it isn't. Preorders in the UK are £2200 when the old lens retailed for £900-1000. That's a ridiculous price hike, that lens better work fking wonders.

And I seriously think it will. If it's not at least as good as the 70-200 II it's going back! I am building my Holy Zoom Trinity i.e. it will be nice trio with the addition of the 14-24/2.8L - and we shouldn't have too long to wait - hopefully it will happen later this year.

I have the original 24-70. It is tack sharp and one of my favorite lenses. Frankly, I don't understand why anyone who owns the original would fork out over two grand for the "upgraded" one. As a matter of fact, if I didn't own the original I would purchase a used one.

I think the original that you have might have some probs and some people needs to send it in to get it adjusted, some kind of design flaw, a mechanical on. If you read the description of the new one there is a lock on the zoom ring now..I wonder if that is the reason for updating it...
