I've owned both good & bad copies of the old 24-70 (both since sold), and I currently have one copy of the 24-105 which I use for studio work mostly at F8.
Killer optics mean nothing attached to a weak autofocus system .. personally I'm not spending another nickle on any Canon lenses until they offer a prosumer FF body with reliable focus. And if they don't do that soon I'm moving to the dark side
Lots of people eyeing the dark side now with that D800.
I used to own a D300 before I got involve with canon and their focusing system was great. I am too waiting to see what canon releases.

No way, Robert ?
Are you selling your 50 f/1.0 ?
Absolutely not selling the 50 1.0L.
You know my motto have a foot in every little camp. So just another tool(800E) to put in the toolbox. and yes it is preordered.
To be honest I didnt see the 24-70L announcement til much later but as impressive as the specs show, the older model is all I need. Though being lighter and having an 82mm filter size just isnt enough to convince me to go for it. If I want better quality I will grab one of the L primes and zoom with my feet.
I won't at 2300 MSRP. I will wait untiol there's a special where there's like 5-700 off. I will more than likely DIVE in if they bundle it with a body too.
I'll stick with my 35L/50L combo with the 24-105 for travel. Looks nice though, It will still be in the $1700-1800 range after the intial rush methinks.
Looking at the MTF charts I reckon this will be an awesome lens for the 24-70 crowd, I'm just not one of them. I like the look of the 24 2.8 IS though....

Leap frog Canon! Or else the money machine will start to stutter. The money machine that did so well because Canon listened better to the market than any other company in the photomarket the last decade.
Let's have EOSfun
I'm not (yet) worried that Canon will stumble so badly that they abandon DSLRs and leave our investments unsupported, but I do wonder whether their new bodies are going anywhere in the next year or two. You hinted (in an early post about a prototype in the wild) that the 5DII successor will have a very high MP sensor. I suppose your hint in this thread is that it won't offer other improvements (AF, etc.) that we ought to be able to expect. Maybe Canon is more stuck than ever in the notion that "performance" belongs in a professional flagship (1Dx) and image quality belongs in a different body (5Dx)?
I don't know why a thread about a new lens has pulled me into the camera body riot more strongly than the multiple threads about the bodies, but it did! On topic:
I'll likely stick with my original 24-70 L for its limited uses, continue with the 24-105 L when IS is critical, and use the fast primes when I can. Not tempted by this Mk II.

As good as it seems to be, my EF lens purchases are on pause until Canon release a high resolution camera. The Nikon D800 and D800E sample images are just that good. Not only resolution, but tonality and clean shadows at base ISO, and at that resolution, really smell medium format. I want to see what Canon deliver on the camera side before buying more expensive glass.

There's a thought, a 5D3 kit lens! With a decent price premium it would be a great marketing sense.

The 24/2.8 is even more beyond me. I liked the classic version for it's price performance ratio, but it wasn't a top secret that this was one of the least sold EF lenses because of all of the overlap with other 24 lenses in the bag of the enthusiast photographers.
But to get crisp edge to edge landscape on high MP FF you have to go to a wide prime now at like $1600+ so now they lowered the entry to that to $850 list (less in stores before long). So is that bad?
I made my point clear enough with my comments at the introduction of the 1Dx already. The next disappointment for a lot of EOS adapts is around the corner. Most of you know what I am hinting at.
most, but not me hah
i predict 32MPish, 6fps, 7D++ AF for many reasons but your hints keep making me think 18MP,4-5fps, crippled 7D AF hah although apparently others read your hints to imply 30MPish,6fps,7D+ AF so I am
Tamron is not an option, really. They are just simply underbuilt which is too bad because the optics are generally pretty good. But for everyday use I'd consider them disposable .. buy three or four and throw 'em out when they break.
