I would be surprised if the actual price is over 2k when it actually hits the store shelves. Even then, I would only entertain $2k if it had IS. It had better be pretty awesome to command that kind of price.
Whoa did anyone look at the MTF for this new 24-70! Whoaaaa! Beats the new 24 2.8 IS prime's MTF! AND it destroys the old 24-70 MTFs and it even handily beats the 24 1.4 II MTF at 24mm!!
Not that they are everything and Canon does the fake computer generated charts, but it does hint that a good copy of this zoom may deliver out of this world insane image quality.
Wow at 24mm this new 24-70 simply DESTROYS the old 24-70 if the MTF charts are to be believed. Just kills it at f/2.8 AND at f/8! And at 70mm it utterly annihilates the old 24-70 at f/2.8! Just destroy all monsters it! And beats it at f/8 as well.
More shocking, according to the charts it also beats the new 24mm 2.8 IS at f/2.8 and f/8 and the 24 1.4 II at f/8 (and maybe even f/2.8 for all we know).
Assuming things work out as the charts imply, of course, and who knows about bokeh or CA, etc.

Amazing. And the 2.8 primes are $800-850. Ummm, Canon, Nikon doesn't need any more help.
yes but according to MTF charts the new 24-70 II should utterly demolish the old one in terms of performance and it appears it will, at 24mm, even beat out the 24 1.4 II prime and the new 24 2.8 mm prime (of course the new 24 prime costing $850 and not using a single UD and then getting beat by the new zoom does seems to be a shame and cheap out on Canon's part)

Why would you think that?
The 70-200ISv2 hit the shelves at it's MSRP of $2499 and sold out for a few months.
If it's the performance equal to the new 70-200 then I suspect that this lens will follow suit in initial pricing as well.
But it does seem a bit high in any regard. Maybe lack of sales because of the high price might bring it down, but I wouldn't bet on it.
It does occur to me that you get a lot more lens for you're money with a $2100 70-200ISv2 than the new 24-70.
Just from a materials and construction point of view, not to mention IS is included.

I also predicted that Canon was done with non-L primes except for EF-S.
I never thought they'd add IS to such primes either.
I do remember all those threads about the proposed disappearance of non-L, non-EFS primes.
But that was all just speculation, so you can be forgiven.
Who really knows what's going on in the heads of those guys at Canon. You think you have them pegged and then it blows up in your face!

I have to eat my words. I had predicted such a lens would be about $1900.

Now, if they made the 28 or 24 prime really sharp at f/8, corner-to-corner I
think it would be worth the money.
according to MTF charts the new 24 2.8 IS may be a touch sharper corner to corner at f/8 than the 24 1.4 II, although had it had some UD elements it may have easily beaten the 24 1.4 II and for $850 it probably should have (and at that small element size they add little to cost so real penny pinching by Canon there I'd think).
but anyway for landscapes it may be better, since you have IS for when you have no time for a tripod and it might perform as well to a hair better stopped down and cost half the price, remains to be seen in reality of course though
yeah I have to eat my wordstoo I had said they were done with any non-L primes
