p.2 #1 · Why Did Canon Renew Rebates?

Rebates are an incredibly profitable item for manufactures of all types. You would be amazed at the high percentage of rebates that are never processed. Rebates are often as not, profit generation programs.

Here is a link to Canon's Rebates.

http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer?pageKeyCode=53

Please note you could double up on rebates if you were to purchase a 5D II, 7D or 60D.

Too bad I am not in the market for one of those bodies. Only if they let you double up on rebates if you got rid of one of them....I'd be in great shape!!!

I totally agree as I might have a bunch at any point in time sitting on my desk but 90% go expired before I have a chance to deal with them.

However, Canon rebates in question here are ALL instant rebates! No cutting UPC codes out of boxes, no receipts, no mailing or trips to the post office. That's my kind of a rebate!

I think this bundle approach is to reduce the inventory of cameras while giving some discount to the lenses too. The camera sales is their real target with this rebate and i think you can expect each one of them to be replaced soon not just the 5D MKII.

Any chance you could provide a link to the current rebates? Trying to figure out if the 17 TS-E is on there still. Looks like the price went back up.

The 17 TS-E is not on the current rebate:

1) They're desperate to keep sales up - to put on rebates for this long, they must be hurting
2) They're losing ground from Nikon
3) They have a lot of surplus inventory because of the economy, so people haven't been buying

Canon had a tough year last year, with all the flooding, earthquake, etc. They had lots of big sales in the 4th quarter trying to boost sales for the fiscal year.

The president stepped down due to the poor performance. They already see possible slow sales in 2012, so we will be seeing some lower prices as they attempt to move inventory.

Nikon is in deeper doo doo, their FY2011 ends March 31, look for cuts in Nikon prices in /march as they try to boost sales figures. http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/03/nikon-posts-q3-2011-earnings-sees-extraordinary-losses-due-to/

Next to all this: I guess their rebated sales where just and simple: very successful. They sold numbers they did not dream about and still made a lot of money. So why not going on with it?

Or they did not sell enough and have excess inventory they need to clear.

Even after the rebates, the prices are still much higher than where things were a couple years ago. Let's face it...people like to think they are getting a deal.

I'm guessing the higher cost of living and doing business has narrowed their profit margin as I don't think prices have gone up enough to reflect skyrocketing energy costs and the subsequent escalating transportation, materials and manufacturing costs. Normally, all of it would be passed on to consumers but I suspect Canon has held back a bit due to the poor economy.

I heard it's because Canon is failing to Nikon and since this is better than bankruptcy, they do this first.

Canon stopped doing that kind of rebate a few years ago, after many reports of problems threatened to harm their reputation.

Recent promotions have been based on "instant rebates" - e.g. an actual reduction in purchase price, without any need for doing the rebate application dance.

No. It is because Nikon cameras and lenses have "3D effect" and Canon don't. Or maybe I have that backwards.

Now, now! Only the magical mystical EOS 3D can lay claim to the "3D effect"!

p.2 #14 · Why Did Canon Renew Rebates?

I remember Apple Computer's Gil Amelio back in 1996-1997, had an attitude that pushed Apple's performance to a twelve year low basically due to his boldness and complacency. He believed and even in an interview with Wall Street Journal said Apple is Maglight of flashlights…i.e. saying Apple is in a league in the computer industry that puts it at the same level Maglight is among flashlights! With that kind of a belief came the complacency that therefore Apple could charge any price it wants and consumers will have to pay. As you older folks may remember, Apple as a result of its CEO's poor judgement and bad leadership, handed their market to PC makers who grabbed it and ran with it!!!!! As we all know, it took them a long time and a great deal of humbling to catch up and price themselves at a more reasonable level with a quality and reliability that clearly corresponds to the price and surpasses it.

As a community of Canon users with a great deal of $$$$$$ invested in Canon gear, we only hope that they do not get bold like Apple did. Lets hope they have not become complacent at Canon and that Canon WILL NOT price the new Camera gear such as highly anticipated 1D-X out of our reach and hand their business to the competition!

In some respects, they already have. The pricing for the new Mk II telephoto lenses is simply outrageous, and the markets for the used Mk I lenses are putting even those out of reach.

People like myself have learned to do without, or simply find other alternatives that are "good enough".

That ship sailed years ago, starting about the time they had the gall to release the 30D>40D 'update', and continued on through the 1D MkIII debacle and the technological hobbling of the 5D MkII. Only the 7D suggested that Canon was beginning to see the light (design/features-wise), but if the 1Dx isn't every last bit as good (technologically) as they suggest, it could be sad days in C-Town.

one of their european execs already admitted as much one of the camera media reported from a show and he was basically bragging about how they were so infinitely far heard of hopeless nikon when it came to FF, years ahead, that they just planned to sit back and rest as king's of the hill and that they could always instantly react to anything nikon came up with, should be some miracle they ever reach FF technology (I think Nikon released FF like 6 months later )

i was pretty shocked by the attitude they displayed, assuming the reporter didn't slant things

it could be that, who knows, epson had some huge rebates on mid-high end printers and kept extending and even increasing them at the end of last year, maybe clearing out stock for some tax or sales quarterly reporting numbers too, who knows

What the heck is a Maglight? Is that a failed brand? I've seen iNova, Streamlight and Fenix in highend sports and gun shops.
