Hi,
The D800 is 'official' from french magazine Chasseurs d'images (they are very reliable and wouldn't publish this for the sake of rumor. they had the infos from themselves and some contacts, not from Nikon so they don't feel to respect anything regarding official annoucement) : http://www.chassimages.com/forum/index.php/topic,146552.0.html

Free to purchase whatever you like. However, there is no need to announce your change, I could care less, but thanks for letting us know. I am certain Canon is quite upset at your announcement of their impending failure.
If the given specs came out as the truth, Nikon failed (again) for me with both D4 and D800. At this specs the new bodys are not worth a thought (for me) to change/upgrade from my 3 years old 5D II, that serves my needs in ISO and IQ equal or still even better (what we have to see).
Ok sory to annoy you, I never post rumor and though D800 officials specs would be interested in these wait for annoucement days. About canon failing I don't care I'm not fanboy, I just use what works for my needs. Won't bore you again on this forum.
If it's a full 24x36mm sensor, I guess that would make it Nikon's first real Full Frame camera... no more having to call it "FX format" to avoid issues with consumer protection laws.

Let's see next Canon annoucements ...
If I remember correctly, you're right; the magazine does have a pretty good track record with real specs. It sounds like a landscape/portrait shooters dream camera in many ways, and - assuming it's real - if the IQ holds up Nikon will have a lot of takers..
It's only great news for Canon people. Let's hope for a similar scenario as with the 5D mark II where we had for a very long time a superior camera after Canon came with an answer to Nikon.
If that's true I'm getting one without the AA filter without a doubt. With Zeiss ZF.2 21mm, 50mm Macro and 100 Macro lenses this should produce some jaw dropping detail. It may be time to consider Leitax'ing my Leica R prime lenses to Nikon mount. Those would really shine. You could do some real damage with the Leica 19, 28, 90, 100 Macro, the crons... This may send old Leica R lens prices to the moon!

Superior to what? Different to Nikon and an excellent camera but not superior.
It makes sense that if Sony can fit 24mp onto an APS sensor, that the new high end full frame sensors could be 36mp. I just wonder if the wide angle lenses are good enough for 36mp, especially in the corners.

Also Canon is not reading your posts or mine, other people do and I believe your posts manner belongs to dpreview.com.
Canon is not falling and will not, they are in most cases cheaper here in US and we are main electronics consumers in this world I believe. I am personally careless about new cameras and I prefer to buy better lenses. Lot of people here shooting with 5-10 years old cameras and very happy with them.
Somehow I don't think Canon will "fail" as the OP predicts as a result of the release of just one camera body by Nikon. Canon's share of the DSLR market is twice that of Nikon's. Canon's response to this "jee wiz" Nikon body should be sonething even better. Don't you just love capitalism.
As far I remember, Sony is even much bigger than Canon and Nikon, right? Does that mean they are superior in photo gear? That would be new to me. :-)
But anyway and again (yes I know, again and again and again: I am a fanboy): Nikons first (and imo only) time, where they overcome Canon in DSLR competition was D3X. Not a great result for 10 years now. Based on specs D4 is just another try of "we too" again. But I believe when I see what 1D X is able do deliver. And the good point: First Time Nikon offers a (til now) better price.
I really wish, Nikon will do better with D800. We will see, if/when it will be released. If it will be with the given specs to me it is a nice body and a good adon to Nikons high consumer/semipro line, that will make it΄s sales. Not interesting for my needs so far (again), but it could bring D700 prices down to 1000 soon, what I could imagine to pay for it.
