Once Nikon has something comparable, then Tokina could conveniently lower it's price, but to be honest, I think a new Nikon 70-200 f/4 VR would probably run in the $1400 range
Still that is less than the current f/2.8 VR and would drop a bit over time. I just want the smaller, lighter f/4 lens and $1000 for the Tamron is not money well spent.

So the story goes, but I haven't seen evidence that Tokina sources chips from Nikon. Do you know that to be true? I ask, because I do see the odd compatibility complaint on the web, often related to Live View autofocus.

You can take it for what it's worth but my info.comes from a retired Nikon engineer who does my heavy work. My general camera repair guy that does generalized stuff and Tokina USA.
On a whimsey I bought a Tokina 400mm through KEH last year and it came at a cusp time. It worked fine with all functions on my D1X but didn't focus well on my D700. I called Tokina and sometimes they would re-chip for free but not this time. It would be $100 and I didn't want to put any more coin into the lens. On reflection I should have as it was a fine lens in all other respects.

They're not, I had no trouble finding one last year to check out. Unfortunately, it was pretty soft at 2.8, and I think that money would be better spent on a faster focusing, smaller Nikon 300/4.
The series II I tried was fine across the board but they quit making them about 7 years ago. I'm on the waiting list at KEH and other reputable dealers that handle Tokina. They are even looking for sales samples.
