p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 24-105 L without a red ring?

I bought a used body last week and the owner offered a 24-105 for [not many] pounds, so I got it too... the lens is labelled as an 'L' and has IS, seems to work just fine but it doesnt have the normal red ring round the front of the lens. Did canon ever make one without, or has someone removed it?

and any tips on how to clean the crud out of the rubber grips before I sell it?

No, the ring has been removed or lost. I'd be a bit leery that there are other problems with the lens.

me too, but it seems to work OK.

It's not as sharp as my 24-70 but there's not a whole lot in it....

Mine too, works just fine.

If you hunt around online, you'll find there's a number of people who've had this issue. Supposedly a bit of a design flaw because of the ring's proximity to the focus ring, which can stress the ring until it snaps.

Regarding cleaning the rubber rings, I have had good success cleaning them with a small amount of alcohol on a toothbrush.

For cleaning the rubber, I would suggest an automotive rubber/vinyl cleaner, such as THIS.

It is available at major auto supply stores.

It might sound stupid but I like the idea of not having the red rings. In some cases I'd love them all to just be indistinguishable from any other lens and wish the whites were actually black instead.

Nikon does this.

Yeah, sure, but then you'd have to own Nikon

I have seen a listing before where the seller described a bad experience where by he had been mugged for his canon body and L-lens. This 'event' meant that to protect himself from a repeat he picked off the red ring from a perfectly good new replacement L-lens. Fair enough! I'm not sure I would have the guts, taking a slice out of the resale value. But it is a reminder that criminals know the value of a red ring.

So what you're saying is that a bloke carrying around a 1dsmk3 and an 85L is safe if he removes the red ring? The red ring is what attracted the thief?

Stick gaffer's tape all over the gear if you want to make it look ratty, no need to mangle the equipment.

He would have gotten mugged with or without the red ring. But in such a helpless situation he may have felt empowered by targeting the red ring as a cause and removing it.

Start simple, and work your way up if -- and only if -- needed.

Step one is a damp cloth.
Step two is a bit of water and a soft toothbrush.

Most of the time, that's all that's needed.

If not, Step three is 303 Protectant, Honda Spray Cleaner, Meguiar's #40, etc., again applied to the cloth, not the lens.

The red ring is taken off whenever the front element or filter ring is replaced. It's supposed to be put back on, of course, but I've forgotten to do it a couple of times. You can buy one from Canon parts, part # YB2-0901 and put it back on in about 10 minutes.
