p.1 #1 · Zebra birth and Wild Dog interaction- Botswana
It was an amazing experience to be lucky enough to witness this Zebra mum give birth to this foal.
A first for me, and our guide of 13 years had never witnessed such an event!
The foal was on it's feet in minutes, which was fortunate as also in the area were a pack of 11 African Wild Dog which the pair were unaware but now slowly moving toward.
We backed off, so as not to fear nor favour anyone.

With the wild dog pack closing in mum is getting concerned, fortunately she is able to drop the remnants of the afterbirth by simply treading on it which gave them enough time to put some distance between themselves and the WD pack.
It could still have been a different story had the WD not dined out on an Impala the previous evening.
Shown here are some of the pack squabbling over the afterbirth.

Great story with a good ending. The dog runnig with the placenta and being pursued is great. Thye last zebra is also great. You have to love Botswana. I keep going back. Thanks for sharing. Don
