The Leica holds its value because it's already suffered the big drop. And, it's not a digital camera. Leica prices are generally stable. A one generation old DSLR, not so much. At this point, I would hold off buying ANYTHING. New cameras are coming out. Odds are great that if you buy a D700 now, the value will be dropping like a rock over the summer. The shortage on them was artificial because of the damage to the Nikon plant. Right now the prices are at a high ebb, and the tide is about to go out........ By simply waiting, you will either end up with a better choice (D700 has fallen way behind on resolution) or you will save hundreds buying what will soon no longer be a current generation product.

I just bought two D700s new, they're great and I look forward to buying the D4 as it looks good as well. Lets be honest though, if they do come out with a D700 replacement it'll be a D4 in a lighter body, and that won't happen for at least a good 6-12 months (by the time it's in my hands) because they don't want to snub the D4 right away. OR if the D700's replacement happens to be this 36mp monster that rumor suggests, then it won't be the camera for me anyway, as I purposely downgraded my MP count from a 5DII to a D700 as I didn't NEED the MP, but instead needed better focusing, and liked the overall look and feel of the Nikon G lenses (plus body ergonomics of the D700). You have to think about your needs..
I suppose what I'm getting at is, it really depends on what you shoot, and how quickly you NEED the camera. If you need the extra MP for your work/hobby wait for the D800 (rumored 36mp camera). And if you don't need the MP get a D700 as anything that Nikon tosses our way in the next 6-12m will have to be different then the D4 (and may not be suitable for your needs). What I'm getting at is, if you like the specs of the D4 and aren't keen on the D800 (rumored specs) then don't worry yourself, as you won't see a camera that you're keen on for at least 6-12m time.
I do agree though, that the D700 is priced pretty high for what it is, and I'm getting mine at a cheaper price then you guys in the states $2280USD, and I still think it needs to be a few hundred cheaper. Though to be honest, I feel the lenses are a great deal, the 85 1.4G is fantastic, I'd take that ANYDAY over a 85L II which costs a lot more. That and I've been SUPER happy with my 35 1.4G which again I'd take over the 35L. The 24-70L is better then Canon's, and the 14-24 is fantastic. I think the 70-200 VRII and the 70-200L IS II are almost on par (I give Nikon the edge in colors) and it's a better balanced lens. The 50G is the only one I don't like. But again I can't say much for the 50L, as although I used it for a few years, I really hated it.
Which brings up another point, if you're going to wait for the cost of items to come down (or for a new camera). Then you have to consider waiting on the lenses, I suspect that Canon is going to release a 35L II, 50L II and a 24-70L II this year, so u might as well give up photography for one year, until everything has had a refresh
