What kind of shooting speed and AF performance do you need? Maybe a used Sony A850 and ZA 24-70 would work?

The Leica holds its value because it's already suffered the big drop. And, it's not a digital camera. Leica prices are generally stable. A one generation old DSLR, not so much. At this point, I would hold off buying ANYTHING. New cameras are coming out. Odds are great that if you buy a D700 now, the value will be dropping like a rock over the summer. The shortage on them was artificial because of the damage to the Nikon plant. Right now the prices are at a high ebb, and the tide is about to go out........ By simply waiting,

I just bought two D700s new, they're great and I look forward to buying the D4 as it looks good as well. Lets be honest though, if they do come out with a D700 replacement it'll be a D4 in a lighter body, and that won't happen for at least a good 6-12 months (by the time it's in my hands) because they don't want to snub the D4 right away. OR if the D700's replacement happens to be this 36mp monster that rumor suggests, then it won't be the camera for me anyway, as I purposely downgraded my MP count from a 5DII to a D700 as I didn't NEED the MP, but instead needed better focusing, and liked the overall look and feel of the Nikon G lenses (plus body ergonomics of the D700). You have to think about your needs..
I suppose what I'm getting at is, it really depends on what you shoot, and how quickly you NEED the camera. If you need the extra MP for your work/hobby wait for the D800 (rumored 36mp camera). And if you don't need the MP get a D700 as anything that Nikon tosses our way in the next 6-12m will have to be different then the D4 (and may not be suitable for your needs). What I'm getting at is, if you like the specs of the D4 and aren't keen on the D800 (rumored specs) then don't worry yourself, as you won't see a camera that you're keen on for at least 6-12m time.

I do agree though, that the D700 is priced pretty high for what it is, and I'm getting mine at a cheaper price then you guys in the states $2280USD, and I still think it needs to be a few hundred cheaper. Though to be honest, I feel the lenses are a great deal, the 85 1.4G is fantastic, I'd take that ANYDAY over a 85L II which costs a lot more. That and I've been SUPER happy with my 35 1.4G which again I'd take over the 35L. The 24-70L is better then Canon's, and the 14-24 is fantastic. I think the 70-200 VRII and the 70-200L IS II are almost on par (I give Nikon the edge in colors) and it's a better balanced lens. The 50G is the only one I don't like. But again I can't say much for the 50L, as although I used it for a few years, I really hated it.

Which brings up another point, if you're going to wait for the cost of items to come down (or for a new camera). Then you have to consider waiting on the lenses, I suspect that Canon is going to release a 35L II, 50L II and a 24-70L II this year, so u might as well give up photography for one year, until everything has had a refresh

Well, if you do wind up trying Nikon for a while, grab some Nikon Manual Focus lenses, like the 105 f/2.5, 180 ED IF AI-s f/2.8, and give them a whirl. Look here for examples:

I have jumped around quite a bit myself. I am pretty happy with the 5D2, however; AF could be better (Canon people don't kill me but it's true). Still a great camera though. I will take a 5D3 if/when it comes out (maybe an announce in Feb). It has been a couple months of good news for the photog community, I expect to hear more in Feb.

I think I'm probably the most prolific system switcher on the boards, especially if you divide number of complete system changes by the number of years as a DSLR shooter

Frankly I feel your "pain" if you want to call it that, though really I see nothing wrong with swaps if one can afford it - gives you a lot of experience with different systems, and if you buy and sell used you can actually do this dance for fairly cheap - I've maybe lost $1200 or so, but that's over the course of about 8 or 9 complete system changes and because two of the systems were A) Not Canon or Nikon and B) bought completely new, meaning I took huge hits on the reselling.

I think you need to analyze *WHY* you want to change and what you want out of the gear, then go from there.

But, nothing wrong with trying out different things if you can

No gear makes a photographer better. Happier, maybe, but not better.

D7000's a great camera - I owned one myself, still wish I had it.

Then again, I still wish I had every camera I've ever owned - they are great in their own ways.

I'm pretty sure I'm just a poor camera collector.

that's kind of the dilemma i am going through, i guess. for some reason, a d700 + 50 + 20 seems to be what would make me happiest, but the bodies are some what difficult to come by. if i went, for example, the 5d route, i would save a bunch of money too.

indecisions.

Yeah I guess it boils down to what you're going to do with the setups.

I've owned the D700 three times, 5D2, and now the 5Dc. I went with the 5Dc because it saved me about $1000 over the D700 or 5D2 routes, so I pumped that into glass (specifically, it let me get the 70-200 MK II).

Yeah the D700 is better than the 5Dc, but really it's not *MASSIVELY* better, especially for what I shoot and what I mostly care about (image quality). I'd love to own the D700 again, but I'm quite content with my 5Dc...the only thing I really miss is the flash commander.

I'd recommend looking at the system as a whole, though, not just the bodies, because in the end that might be a big factor. I love Canon's cheap long options (100-400, 300 f/4 IS + TC, 400 f/5.6) way better than Nikon's, and I also like their 17-55 crop lens has IS, whereas Nikon's doesn't.

There are certainly pros and cons to each setup and it's a very personal choice IMO - some people can't stand Nikon ergonomics (they're fine to me, though a bit 2-handed central), some people can't stand focus-recompose with 5D cameras, some people prefer the color response of one system or another, etc.

Of course gear can make you a better photographer. Are you "cerebral enough" to allow it to augment your photography would be the more precise question. Its true in saying the camera doesn't "make" the photographer, but it enables us the ability to have LESS LIMITATIONS... thus letting us be better photographers. Go shoot a concert with a D3x then do it with a D3s.

Once you realize that D3s provided better low-light images... you will see that those photos from the D3s was BETTER than the D3x... which translates to you being a better photographer with a D3s than a D3x. Should read Jerry Ghionis blog recently... he shared your same principles until he discovered his D3s haha. Equipment matters sometimes... if it didn't then stick to a point and shoot.
