@ Matt,
this is a good point.
That's why I never have a filter on any of my lenses.
However, the benefit that a pola filter does for my image, will out benefit the supposed loss of reduced resolution.
Cheers,
W
Even if it does reduce the resolution, the filtered 14-24 will likely still outperform a 16/17-35 with a "higher grade" CPL filter, let alone any of the other filterable sub-21mm options. If it doesn't, than the filter must be so poor that this system is a complete pointless joke (I certainly hope this isn't the case).
In case anyone is interested in shelling out for better quality filters than Hoya has shown to be in the past they might write Schneider and suggest a line up of 145mm filters. I wrote them and am waiting for a response. Regardless, showing interest is what will help the most. Here's their email address for the B&W contact dept.:
As it is the Schneider lineup stops just below at 138mm. This may not be such a pipe dream as I don't think they sell many of those due to demand (but what do I know) however with the availability of the Fotodiox adapter demand for 145mm size has been created.
Just did an admittedly quick test (peering through the cracks of my fingers scary movie style) and I think it's alright. I noticed no appreciable loss of resolution with the Fotodiox polarizer. I shot with a D7000 to get a sense of what it'll do with a similar sensel size, at 24mm only, f/5.6 @ 2500/sec. Daylight balance. Tripod, mirror lockup. What I did notice is a pronounced warming effect. Not the least bit neutral. Some would call this a plus. Not me, but I think I can compensate once I have it characterised better. I can't put up my results as I'm rushing out the door and off the grid for the next week. Also, I heard form Zeiss that they have no plans for a polarizer to fit this thing, no surprise. If we keep asking they may see the dollar signs.
Scratches easily, imparts warmth, with repeated attachment/detachment it becomes significantly more fluid and efficient, but that really takes a concerted effort and practice. It does make a BIG difference in those shots that call for it so, yes, it gets my vote. I'm on a freshly returned-from-autofocus-adjusted D800e now and will run more resolution tests and report back if different.
