Matt, if you have a 400mm f/5.6 lens or a 100-400mm lens, is that not better to use any of those lenses with a crop body, let's say a 7D, to get the reach? Why get a 1D X at 4X-5X the price? It is way overkill, too .
Primarily because I wouldn't use the camera (APS-C) for anything else but wildlife. For me a tool like a camera has to serve all my needs, more specifically what pays the bills. Perhaps later down the road, when money is no longer an object/I marry a sugar-momma, I will be able to afford specific cameras for specific tasks

I agree with you entirely; on both accounts actually, APS-C primarily for wildlife and the need for a sugar-momma . But none of the APS-C camera bodies allows AF at f/8.0 anyway, which is the point of contention in this case.

Right, but they still offer the most ppd/larger crop factor which is advantageous for wildlife work, especially if you're fl limited. For me, though, I require a body that can do it all very well (wildlife/macro, portraiture, event, etc etc)--it's the only way I'll feel I got my money's worth. The fact that the 1DX, being 18mp, wasn't granted f/8 AF is a major downer for me--perhaps even a deal breaker. But, like I said, if I (or my sugar momma ) could afford a 500/600/800mm lens I wouldn't be complaining--at least not as much

For these youngsters, a sugar mama would certainly help, however, having a gainful employment and some sort of a productive profession goes a much longer way in life.

I was raised that way and I'm workin' at it....but I'm sure you would agree a sugar momma on top of that wouldn't hurt in the slightest.

Peter and I already paid our dues and we probably are at the age that will not require any sugar momma to provide us any gear. Actually, it is the other way around, we could be a sugar daddy . Sorry for being off topic here but we really cannot be too serious about gear. There is still life outside photography and FM and for sure, it is not the end of the world .

I understand that fully but I am speaking from my personal experience and I know that that varies widely among photographers. Like I said, to each his/her own and don't let this hold you back. It is good that we are not limited to just a single brand .
Other than that it we could get lighter lenses like
800mm f/8 (about the weight of 200/2)
400mm f/8 (about the weight of the 100/2)
200mm f/8 (about the weight of the 50/2)
And there are instances that the subject's really tiny so a 1200/8 would be really helpful.
There's more than enough time to correct it and I am thankful Nikon took the lead with f/8 on more than one focus point.

Aaah, you are referring to potential future lenses. Well, I am not counting on those . The 400mm f/5.6 is light and compact enough; just add a 4-stop IS and a lot folks will be dancing on the street. Seriously, who needs a 200mm f/8 lens? For sure, I don't but I understand that people's needs vary quite a bit.
Like I mentioned earlier, indeed, Canon may still tweak the 1D X to allow AF at f/8.0. We will see....but don't count on it.

It is good to dream. For our ambitions spring forth from it.
Just a Custom Function would be great if the the f/8 capability messes with overall performance when it is turned on by default.
WIldlife photography is pretty much accessible by about 10% of all photogs mainly from the sticker shock on lenses. I would like it to become more accessible to everyone through coupling it with advancements in high ISO bodies.

That's a good point! I like that.

I understand where you are coming from. However, IMHO, the sticker shock starts with a body first. Seriously, who wants to pay $6-7K for the 1D X while the 7D is available at $1,5K if you are an inspiring wildlife shooter? For sure, I wouldn't buy the 1D X in that position. Plus, there are also the existing 1D series bodies, the Mark III and IV, which are very capable for that purpose, and they provide more reach and they can focus at f/8.0. And they cost less than the 1D X, too. I would definitely and seriously consider the 1D Mark IV as my main wildlife body.

I am not doing birds. I do people. In fact I did never think about a lense longer than 300mm. I used the 100-400 and it was a fine lense. I would never purchase it.
Others do.
But I do not see the use (for me) for a lense combo of 8.0.
If the image in the viewfinder is so dark I can not even focus manual.
Any keeper is just a hit of the gear. May be I am different to other shooters (of course I am ). But for me its still me, who does the pic. If I am not able to see in the VF what I get, there is no need (again: or me) in using a SLR/DSLR. This is like throwing dices.

I would think, assuming f/8 AF is possible at all given the hardware used, that once a lens with an f/8 aperture is mounted the camera would automatically recognize it as so, like it does now. If Canon is telling us the truth there is reason to believe this is a hardware issue which may not be corrected by a cfn.
It does seem extremely odd now that Canon has apparently sacrificed f/8 AF and Nikon has stepped it up several notches by including multiple f/8 AF points across the frame.

lol a sugar momma - be careful what you hope for (chris humphrey)
when i was young i too would have liked a SM . . . however the journey to the top with your best friend can be more rewarding than just arriving on the top. i find life kinda boring without challenges. maybe it is just the way i am wired.

Prenup, Grant....prenup. If it was legit, she would be the perfect woman on top of being wealthy--camping/hiking/cooking/sexy/love for the outdoors, fine automobiles, good beer/good maternal instincts/loyal/sexy/smart/funny/did I mention sexy?...all of that in her repertoire.

Because she fullfills everything you dream about. And yes, you forgot to mention: sexy
Back on topic:
If Canon (or anyone else) would present her a 1DX, she would give it to me in exchange for my 5D MK II. If that is no sugar momma, I do not know who is ...

If you are shooting Nikon already with quite a bit of Nikkor glasses that would be a no brainer. If you are considering switching to Nikon, that's a different story. At least, I would wait until both cameras are available and reviewed before making a decision. Based on a poll on the Nikon forum (https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1074246), it looks like the majority, by a margin 2:1, won't buy that camera. Since you are Nikon shooter, are you pre-ordering the D4 then or have you voted, at least ?

I have indeed per-ordered one. It arrives the week after my 30th birthday so I figured it would make an awesome birthday treat!
You're right of course. If I had Canon glass I'd buy the 1Dx. They're both awesome cameras.
