p.2 #1 · Zeiss Distagon ZE 35mm F1.4 or F2 for my Canon 5D Mark II???
THANKS so much Smridevan!!! Just exactly what I need!!! I was immediately poisoned by the bokeh from the F1.4! In terms of details, I think both lenses are about the same to me.
Damn! Seems like I have to part with the extra money for the 35/F1.4 ZE now that I am leaning more towards it. Anymore tests to share people?

I so appreciated the discussion as I am a Nikon D3s shooter - have the 21 - 50MP - 100MP - and am evaluating exactly what sgfarfaraway is evaluating! Thanks so much everyone - especially Philber for the pictures and comments (you had commented once before on the subject but I couldn't find your comments recently). Great someone asked the question before I got to it. Any comments by Nikon folks about the lens - any difference between Canon and Nikon for the lens?

Any side by side examples which show this out of curiosity?
I'm sorry but I don't have any side by side comparisons.
The feeling I get from looking at my shots taken with the 1.4 vs the f2 is that the 1.4 renders more life-like and the f2 gives a photo a more contrasty look.
At the same aperture, the 1.4 gives you less DOF than the f2. The transition from in focus to blur is also different.
Both really are excellent lenses, but to me the 1.4 is just more special.
I also just love shooting at f1.4 for that wideangle shallow DOF look.
Might as well post some shots taken with my 35/1.4 ZE:

Great photos and feedback. I love using the Zeiss 35mm 1.4 as it produces images with unique character and smooth bokeh. The only thing that annoys me on ocassion is it's size and weight. Although, immediately after looking at the photos it produces, I stop complaining I posted some photos and comparison with Canon 35L on my blog: http://imransblog.com

I chose the 35/2 because of three reasons:
1) size and weight - it's f'n huge. nearly 2 lbs.
2) cost - it's is double the cost of the 35/2 for used prices
3) field curvature - I'd use the lens stopped down for landscapes as often as I used it for anything else.
I can't comment on the comparison between either lenses - I currently have the 35-70/3.4 and love it stopped down. i'll let you know my findings once I have a chance to play with the lens.
That's a very good and revealing comparison. To my eyes, the 35/2 has a bit more of the traditional qualities one often associates with Zeiss 35mm lenses - more contrast (including micro-contrast), color saturation and "pop" whereas the 35 1.4 definitely renders a softer and more subtle look (almost more of a "classic" look but one I don't usually associate with Zeiss 35mm lenses). The difference in the plane of focus to oof rendering is dramatic with the 35/2 appearing sharper in the oof areas and the 35/1.4 dropping off more dramatically into a soft oof rendering (again, more classic looking though Zeiss wide angles are often noted for the former quality of having seemingly more dof at a given aperture). Two dramatically different lenses indeed with regard to rendering.

I agree; I own the ZF 35/2, and rented the ZF2 35/1.4 for 2 weeks. Shot side by side, the 35/2 seemed to have just a bit more 3D rendering; but at times hard to tell. For me, I decided that I was happy with the 35/2 - especially since the 25/2 was on the horizon.

It looks every inch a modern Zeiss, Jochen. Plenty of contrast of both kinds, and 'contrast is not a dirty word'. I see what you mean however, you feel more like you are looking into the scene than at the scene.

The Contax has a lower price. Other than that I can't see anything that is nore interesting or better with that lens compared to the ZE lens
wide open bokeh is smoother in the center and wilder in the corners in the comparison shots between it and the ZE 1.4. this will lead to a different look for environmental portraits i would expect. it's also much smaller. on the other hand i'm sure it is noticeably worse for stopped down landscapes corner to corner.

I don't see anything of that more interesting/better than the new lens. With the old lens you will not have the electronic shutter control and additional electronic contacts to the camera. And you need to buy an adapter which is a huge disadvantage and not make it more interesting

Great samples!
I've owned the 35L, Samyang 35 and the 35/2 ze lenses and my pick is the 35 f/1.4 ze, it's rendering is unique and the bokeh is just something else. It never disappoints and wows me everytime I see the stunning renditions. It's very special when you use it at f/1.4 which is why you'd buy it for but stopped down it's brilliant with the details and clarity as well. Congrats on the purchase!

Thanks people! I just got the 35/1.4 and it is great! Loved it the moment I held it in my hands and the images it produced look special too! However just got a little problem about nailing the focusing right the first time. Though I changed my focusing screen to the EG-S type for 5D mark 2, i feel that the upgrade did not do much in terms of helping me nail it. Any advice on how to consistently nail the focus? Meanwhile I will practise!!!
