The buy and sell board, and subsequent feedback system is meant to provide a way for potential buyers or sellers to see the FM history a member has accrued based on ACTUAL TRANSACTIONS. Things like communication, accuracy of the description, prompt and honest payment...this is what people look for. Each member has the right to sell to whomever they want to based on absolutely nothing at all. It's obviously in the best interest of the seller to sell to the first person that comes along that is willing to pay the price asked. That being said, there's no rules that FM puts in place to "make" you sell to someone, or make you purchase something. Leaving negative feedback based on a nontransaction is a complete abuse of the feedback system.
I buy and sell a lot of stuff here and on craigslist. I also disike it when I get blown off, or have something bought out from under me, but that's the nature of buying and selling things. If you don't like it, don't do it. Or get good at it, have the money ready when you want something and be ready to pay when communication happens. Sheesh.

Placed an ad in Buy and Sell and within two hours someone tried to lowball my price. Called him out on it. Guy got pissed at me and said he has the full amount of money and would have bought it but that he always asks for a lower price first. Now he refuses to buy it because he is mad at me! Get real. Always an ass somewhere and Buy and Sell attracts them.

Never really had much of a problem with this, but my sale of a lens this past week was really a pain. Four people said they would take it, then asked questions, then backed out or went silent. I've changed my mind before, or something happened like a I needed a new roof suddenly and had to back out, but I think that happened twice in my 10 years buying/selling online. I just don't get people who PM "I'll take it" and then write a little bit later either with important questions or, "Oh, it doesn't come with viewfinder?" when the sale page is very specific and clear. Ask first, then get answer, then decide. I sometimes jump the gun when I see something, but I know enough to take an extra moment and read carefully...because my "I'll take it!" means just that to. Unless Godzilla squashes my house two seconds after I send the PM.

Well, thanks for the heads up. If the price isn't listed as "firm" then I almost always try to dicker. I'm not talking lowballing, I'm just looking to see if the seller has any wiggle room in his price.
If there was an Ignore list here, you'd have just earned yourself a spot on it.

Wow! Such hostility from someone with so few posts, no feedback (and not even subscribed to B&S). So, just because someone might ask to negotiate a price, you'd just arbitrarily say no and use that 'angry' emoticon? Hmmm...remind me not to respond to any of your ads...oh I forgot, you don't subscribe to B&S. Now, where is that 'hide me' button?

Jeez. So is it safe to assume, on the other hand, that you willingly pay asking price for everything (and I mean everything) on God's green earth? My guess is that you offer less than asking price on many things.
The FM B/S is still the best board around, IMO, lowball offers or not. Things tend to move quickly, and there's a way to at least monitor past performance of individuals through the feedback mechanism. Boards such as the one on POTN just plain flat-out suck...no bumping, not as much traffic as FM and, most importantly, NO negative feedback allowed...real waste of time and effort...and basically mostly noobs who want pictures of everything, no matter how big or small. At least with the feedback feature on FM, I can make a decision to forego asking the seller for pictures if the history looks good (and that goes both ways).

When is a transaction classified as a transaction?
I’m old school. Once two parties have an agreement, it is binding. If one later does not fulfill their commitment, at any stage, it can be damaging. If a person I am in discussions with has a history of backing out of agreements, I want to know about it up front. My word / handshake is as binding asany contract, but I know that is not the way of some others in this world.
Why should I, or anyone else, commit to offers from unreliable individuals and risk losing a viable offer from an honest source who will meet their commitment? How can we know unless the information is shared?
