Just another update, for those who are interested (which may be no one but myself lol) but I've found that while the Raynox didn't work, which was a shame due to their front threads, that I've had success just putting a filter of choice into the system with the Nikon instead of the UV filter.

I've used a B+W 10stop ND 49mm and a R72 IR filter, 49mm, and results are good with both of them, the conversion lens doesn't lose any sharpness and seems to work just fine for IR as well.

Polarizer should work fine too, though it is a bit of weight for a rotating ring filter. I might not suggest using an expensive one in that manner, but a Marumi etc should work fine

So to sum up, while the Nikon WC has no front threads, filters are still useable with it

cheers

Don't sell yourself short. I think there's a lot of people watching this thread. I decided last night to get a WC-E68. I'll post my own experience here, once I manage to snag one, and mount it correctly on my X100.

I'd also like to find a decent telephoto aux lens for the X100, as you mentioned earlier. If I could find something that would provide an 85mm equivalent AoV, as well as the 24mm, then I'd buy a second X100 for shooting sacred ceremonies and similar events, where quiet is much appreciated, especially compared to a 1D-series camera.

Keep up the good work.

Hi,
i would like to know if there are any news here?
and secondly if there are any links to a 52-49 step down ring.

regards

Not much new, Nikon WC68 still seems to be the best bang for the buck and as wide I can find. Amazon, ebay etc list wider cheap ones, .45x etc, but in reality they are closer to .75x in terms of FOV, and the distortion is awful. There is a reason they cost $20 or less.

At the same time, no need to spend $150+ on a Panny or Raynox when you can find the Nikon for $50 or so online and its every bit as good optically and actually wider.

52-49mm step down rings are plentiful, you can find them at Amazon, B&H, Ebay etc, cost around $5 or so. Its a very common size.

I'm now working on trying to find some 2x TC's with decent performance so I can have a 70mm equiv as well.

If I can get 24/35/70, with 35mm being my most used focal length, I won't have any reason to spent over 3x as much for a X Pro

Then here we've got some 100% crops of the center, bottom left and right of the 35mm equiv image, which as you can see, is very sharp edge to edge. The X100 really does have an amazing lens.

With the conversion lens, which is just $50 mind you, so don't go expecting 24 Lux levels of performance, I think the overall image holds up really well. I see no visible softness in the center of the frame from the converter and really only at the very extreme edges is there a strong blurring, but really thats only about 5% of the

Looks better than any 24mm (equiv FOV) lens for the NEX

lol, yeah that E mount 16mm f2.8 isn't too touch to beat in the corners lol

Speaking of the 16mm, another lens I'm trying to find back in stock is the Fisheye Conversion lens.

From what I understand its a diagonal fisheye, which I think is about 99% more useful than all the circular fisheyes, and based upon the UWA conversion lens I had, good optical quality to boot.

It was quite easy to take apart the UWA and mount it to a 49mm thread, though the edge quality just wasn't quite up to snuff. Looked pretty cool on the X100 though (see image first page of thread)

I'm not a huge fan of FE or crazy ultra wide, but would like to see how it performs and depending on the spacing needed, what type of FOV I can get, and more so, how it could work with Fisheye Hemi, which is an defishing program I really like. Be pretty sweet to have something like a 18mm equiv or so after defishing with hopefully acceptable IQ. $112 or so for the conversion lens so certainly priced right as another way to open up the creative potential of the x100 for little investment.

I finally tried the Sonyfisheye conversion lens for NEX as it was out of stock for ages but finally got my hands on one and I'm pretty pleased with what I'm seeing so far. Little edge softness and while not a 180 degree diagonal, still quite wide, about 16mm equiv I'm guessing with just mild signature fisheye distortion in most shots. AF seems to work, no vignetting and just a little lateral CA on the edges.

Still testing and trying to make different shim thicknesses but this one could be a winner. I picked up the UWA for about $75 used and the FE one is even less popular so could be even cheaper used.

I'll work on getting some more samples (and edge crops) when I've got time but heres just a downsized images out of camera giving you an idea of the differences in FOV with and without the converter. Thats not vignetting on the top of the frame either mind you but rather roof of my balcony.

and with the conversion lens

Pretty decent overall for the money I'd say, and if your like me, and would just occasionally want to shoot ultra wide maybe for some vacation images it could be some great bang for the buck.

Any chance you've tried this with a tele-convertor yet? The ultrawide is cool, as others said if you can get three different FL's out of an X100, why buy the Xpro1.

Anything less than a 2x TC I don't think is really worthwhile, as a 35 vs 50mm change in focal length just isn't worth the optical degradation, edge softness etc IMHO.

Most all the cheap ones are awful and not close to actually being 2x but the best 2x I've tried was a Canon TC made for the powershot cameras. Its a bit big and does have some obvious vignette and edge sharpness.

Middle of the image is quite sharp though with no degradation that I can see. You only getting about half a frame though once you crop out the smeared edges and such.

There is a pretty big difference in the middle of the frame between using the 2c TC and uprezing the native image 2x to match.

Realistically though as we are only talking about 70mm equiv focal length its hardly like your going to be shooting birds or anything like that with such a combo, nor is the Canon that small, being about 5" in length and weighting 8oz or so. Not really something I'd want to carry very often.

Overall I'd say the wider conversion lenses work far better than the wide angle ones

I just ordered a Nikon WC-E68 on Ebay with a step-up filter 46mm-49mm for 20$ both.
Plus, a cheap 49mm UV filter for 3$.
I can't wait to test them out!

Is this the Sony Fisheye Conversion lens you tested out?

Yes, thats the one

Heres a full sized image (which I think FM should allow to pop up at 100% view if you click on it)

As you can see, its pretty darn sharp edge to edge with none of the typical smearing or CA etc you'd expect in a conversion lens

What do u mean by shimmering the right thickness with the sony fisheye conversion lens?
What do u use to shim it?

The distance from the rear element of the fisheye lens to the front element of the X100 lens needs to be a very specific thickness. As little as 1mm change in spacing can give very soft and blurry corners. It was designed to mount to the 16mm E Mount NEX lens at a specific distance so you have to try to match that as closely as you can.

I mostly use different brands of filters and step/down rings as they are all different thickness, though you can also experiment with the metal outer housing of the FE lens on or off, or taking the plastic sony bayonet mount ring out etc, all those things will add or reduce some thickness.

Best I've found so far is a 52mm to 49mm step down ring used in place of the Fuji adapter as its a little thinner, and pressing that right against the inner plastic lip of the FE adapter, they are the exact same diameter and fit nicely.

Not a 2x converter I know (1.7), but have you considered the Olympus B300/Tcon17?. Originally designed for the Olympus 35mm film bridge cameras. 55mm thread. I've used it on Canon Gs and Canon 70-200 f4

Never tried that one but will look into it, tried the Canon 2x TC58d and while optically very good in the middle of the frame, same edge smearing. I was thinking something with a larger rear element might help but having tried 58mm ones, they really don't work any better than the smaller ones I've tried.

Could be something due to the optical design of the X100 lens itself perhaps, but a tele conversion lens seems a losing endeavor thus far. Probably wiser to just get the XPro if ones really wants longer focal lengths lol.

Luckily though the inexpensive wide and ultra wide solutions I've found work pretty well and can add a little fun to the camera.

On mounting the Sony Fisheye, I am not exactly getting how it is mounted. It sounds like you are putting the step down ring inside the FE after removing some parts. Does the step down ring securely attach, or do you have to hold the FE lens on when shooting?
I do virtual reality panoramas with my Nikon and a 10.5mm lens. And have done a few with the x100, but only as a cylinder projection, not a full spherical VR's , as it would take to many shots with the stock lens Fuji lens. If I can get a this sony FE lens to work it would open open up more possibilities for the x100.
