Here are some shots of Wheel chair hockey. I was only able to stay for a couple of periods but It always inspiration to see these athletes do there thing.
The light in the gym is really low and I was quite surprised how fast and acurate the AF with the EF 200 1.8 USM and Canon 5D2 worked. I am still getting used to shooting with AF and I missed some shots because the AF sensor was off the target. Or it wouldnt lock on. I guess thats the way it goes in the world of AF.
The 3200 ISO looks pretty chunky compared to my Nikon D3/D3s, but it still usable, and I am loving the color of the 5D2 images.
Thanks to my pal David for the invite to the game.
Canon EF 200 1.8 USM on Canon 5D2 @ 1.8 ISO 3200 1/200 to 1/500 of second shutter speeds. All images hand held.
So I got some new images with the 200 1.8 EF/Canon 5D2 combo. I am still getting used to the camera/lens and have often missed shots, for have the camera set wrong. The issue is that I while I am carrying the camera/lens on my right shoulder the dials get moved by my right hip/body. So that is my fault and I am working on a solution.
Even though I am crazy busy teaching/training I am carrying the 200 1.8 EF/5d2 combo everywhere I go. Iv only got the chance to go out street shooting one time in Calgary for a short time. But already I can say that images and reponse from the subjects is very positive.
The Big white lens makes them smile. Me to
Yesterday, I was also carrying the Twin lens Rollie. For me this is amazing street shooting combo. I am also getting back into carrying the Wide Lux F7.
Until I get my second Canon body It's a workable solution for street shooting for me.
I must say that after using a Canon 1D4 the other day at the mall, I am still in awe of the 200 1.8 EF And 1D4 IQ and AF. The feel of Canon 1D4 and the 200 1.8 EF is match made in heaven.
The feel of that camera and the responsiveness of the shutter, is nothing short of amazing.
I finally picked up the EF 12 vesion 2 exstension tube. Today I will be doing some head shots so we will see how that works out.

My pal Buffalo Bill. We had great talk yesterday and I snapped a cople of images with the 200 1.8 and another half a dozen with the Rollie twin. At one one we where laughing so hard I nearly cried. We where talking about the crazy women in are lives. What would life be without them.

Thanks you guys. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. And It's nice to know that some are enjoying this thread.
It's hard to explain how differnt it is using a Canon AF after decades of shooting Nikon Manual focus. I still have a long way to go and plenty to learn, but I am really loving this 200 1.8 EF /5d2 combo.
As far as post processing I know it's lame. But I am still using I-photo . I keep meaning to get up to speed on light room but so far I have not done so.

Canon 200 1.8 EF USM on mono pod Canon 5D2 with Lumedyne flash
With the help of my friend, I was testing out a new portable Lumadyne strobe and the Canon 200 1.8 and 5D2 for portraits.
I got the flash from from my pal Chase in portland , as part of a Nikon D3/ Plubel Makina deal that went a little sideways. I am sure the flash is 50 years old, but I really like the quality of the light.
And while the out put is way to much to shoot anywhere close to F1.8, even at the lowest setting. The modelling light is just enough to use @ 1.8 and 3200.
Since I had the 200 1.8 EF on a mono- pod , and I couldnt find my light stand. I just just held the stobe with my free hand for these shots.
The first one direct flash/modeling light. And the third one was the strobe aimed behind me and bounced of the wall/room behind me.
Having this portable strobe opens up some new possiblities for me , and I look forward to testing it some more.
Thanks to my friend, who really dosnt like having her picture taken(not sure why she is beautiful) but was kind enough to act as my model.
The whole photo session lasted about about a minute, with is about her limited, before she begins to give me dirty looks:tongue:.
Knowing you're new to Eos System you might not know this, first generation supertelephoto lenses sent in for USM failure are no longer serviced by Canon.
Others here can further enlighten us, well me, if I am totally off base.
I don't know all the details, something to do with USM Ring Motor AF unit not being servicable. I know just enough that I never buy first generation white paint glass when its been offered to me locally.
With that all said, your 200mm 1.8L looks absolutely Mint ! I had the FD mount version for a while, sold it to fund my digital move, going from Canon's F-1 & FD System.
I am new to modern EOS Canon system but in fact my first SLR was a Canon AE-1. And over the years I owned the several F-1n (One of my all time favorite 35mm camera's of all time) and couple of T-90's.
At one point I did have the first generation 70-200 2.8 EF and EOS-1 film body. And as I have mentioned, I was lucky enough to use the 200 1.8 EF USM when it was first released.

It's interesting you mentioned you owned the first generation 200 1.8 manual focus. Back in the day that lens, was a major sourse of lens lust for me. I thought was cool Canon made both manual focus and USM versions.
Over the last couple of years Iave made it a point of aquiring many if not almost all the lens/cameras I have always wanted when I was younger and had little money.
And the Canon 200 1.8 EF was on the list. And now that I am luckey enough to have it. I intend using it as much as possible and get the best images I can. And I take care of my gear and make a point of not banging it around.
As far as servicing my copy of the 200 1.8 EF USM. Well, what can I say. I am not worried about it. First off, it's not broken and secondly, well if needs servicing, (knock on wood) there camera repair places besides Canon.
And if it needed a part, that was no longer availble, I am pretty sure I could have one manufactured if I had to. And the fact is Canon will service it, they just may not have the parts if there needed.
I so I guess my point is, I am not going to let a little thing like that worry me.
The Canon 200 1.8 EF is a very special lens and I will take care of it like it the rare jem that it is.

Unfortunately, this isn't true for Canon UK - they won't touch it, and nor will Fixation (the big London CPS-approved repair shop). Their reasoning is that if they open it up and something breaks while doing so, there's no replacement parts available to them and they would be liable to find and replace the entire lens with one of similar condition. An AF motor is not something that could be manufactured on demand either, should it be necessary. There are a couple of US based repair shops which still have a dwindling stock of spare parts though, I think.

Thanks JP ,
Nice shot of the hoop dancer. And you have also have a very nice copy of the 200 1.8 EF. Very cool.
Got several shots published in the Calgary Herald and Calagry Sun, from the car crash today.
There all ready up on there web sites, and they both should make the paper tomorrow.
Even though I have shot this kind of stuff before , It never easy. I drive that road almost everyday and I have seen some bad wrecks on it over the years.
You never know , everyone out there drive safe.
At any rate, I am starting to do more freelance P.J work and the 200 1.8 EF has shown it's mertits in shooting in low light under presure. The editor at the Sun thought I was shooting under lights.

I thought I would bump this thread before it got so far back It got to far back.
I like the comment about the 200 1.8 EF being the big brother of the lowey and 1/3 slower 200 2.0 .
So far so good , loving the 200 1.8 EF. It is a killer hockey lens. Near perfect combo with my 400 2.8 EF and the 85 1.2 EF .
Still post processing the Mac's AAA hockey tournament photo's .
But so far I want to say that AF was pretty decent if I used the middle AF. The keeper rate was very good so long as I waited for the focus to hit. Not the perfect solution, but a workable one to be sure.
On the 7D the 200 1.8 EF is even better. Shame about the crop. But for the price of body it was a good buy. And I was was going broke renting two other 5D2 for the hockey tournament.
Nearly picked up a 1D3 but wasnt able make the deal. I might just have to wait untill the 1Dx to see the real AF capabilities of this lens.

It is true that canon no longer services this lens, there are several shops that do. I was informed that the AF motors on these lenses can often be re-built. I have never heard of anyone who had a broken lens that was unable to be repaired.

Terrific shots Greg, it is great to see all the lovely shots from the local area. I find the 200 1.8 is very reliable, never had an issue or problem with the lens. I'm envious of the Nikon 300 F2. The only one I'm missing from completing my dream holy trinity. 200 EF 1.8, Oly 250 F2, Nikon 300 F2.
Grant terrific action shots of the dancers.
All of your guys shots are tempting me to take mine out for some shooting. Keep posting, I don't know how I missed this thread.
