Wow. Lot of responses.
Makten--ur right travel shouldnt change things too much just threw that in there.
So far 35mm seems to be the weapon of choice with 400/2.8 a close second along with some zooms lol.
To be a little bit more specific, with what we've got at hand on the current market:
Nikon D700 + Voigtländer 40/2 Ultron
Why? Because the D700 is a highly reliable camera with good IQ up to ISO 6400. The lens is very small, sharp and just cannot fail because of its lack of AF.
There are better lenses and better cameras, but either they will cost you a fortune (M9 + whatever Leica lens), or they will give lesser IQ (APS-C camera with whatever lens).

Good choice. Unfortunately i have hard time manual focusing with dslrs, otherwise that setup would be perfect for me.
I need a little more focus... , where are we going?
I spent about 16 days on the rails throughout areas of Europe (Germany, Austria, Italy, and the Czech Republic) in 2008. I carried my 5D mark I and the 24-105L IS... nothing ALT about this stuff, but great of a one lens/one body light travel kit. If I were to do the trip again, I could get by with my 5D mkII & Zeiss ZE 35 f2... or if I owned this an M9 and 35mm or 50mm summicron... nothing says light and packable like a Leica
(edit) Oh... I meant to add this... now if we're going to Tanzanina (or Kenya), I'll be just fine with my 7D + 300 f2.8IS L, but can I leave the 1.4x on it and make it appear to be just one lens
