I mean, I didn't see the piece in person, and maybe it was indeed beautiful, I don't know. What I do know is $4.3M is a lot of money ... Perhaps the buyer just has more money than he needs.

I remember buying a $70.00 ashtray stand off Ebay when I was drunk It's in my attic and maybe I can put it back up to see if someone else who's drunk will buy it hahahaha This goes to prove that some people have way too much money

I think most of the people seriously contributing to this discussion know there's a difference between artistic value and market value.

Value is value, there's always a conversion rate. In this case someone felt the artistic value of the work was worth $4.3M (of market value) and so he bought it. I don't see how you can say there's no relationship.

For me this nothing has to do with "ART" except the art of "making" money.
I like to make money, yes. But I would like to do it in doing things I like. If I do not (make money) I still do things I like. Maybe my brain is to small to understand, that anybody who did a pic like this is proud about he/she did it.
Maybe sombody might be proud about reaching such an exorpitant insane price for something she/he did. If I would be Gursky, I would take the money, give 50% to people in hunger, buy an Island where the wether is nice and quit the system for the rest of my life. I would have aplauded if he would have got 20.000$. 4.3 Million imo just shows, how ill our world already became.
I will not go through my 10 year old folders to reoffer my old learning stuff as art.
I prefere to go out and do what makes me happy: Trying to capture feelings and moments.
By the way here is an old photo I found on an old harddrive. I did in 1983 or 1984. Before I through the slide away, I would like to offer it here. It should bring about 10K$ (wich I need to purchase a 1D X and some lenses):
