p.2 #1 · Trolling the Buy and Sell Board

Points all well taken, so is it worth my bother to post a $1000 lens for sale here, not being a regular for a couple years or more and not having much (if any) feedback? Or should I just list on eBay? (I haven't bought or sold much there for a few years either, and I think that might mean that my feedback rating has vanished or been severely diminished.)

I ask this because I have an item to sell, was going to list it on eBay, but then remembered this site. It's been a long time since I've been active

Hey ... post it! Just cuz there are some folks who would not trust you (risk averse) does not mean there aren't others who would be very interested in what you have to sell and work with you to make it happen. Good luck with your sale.

Lack of trust and being risk averse are not the same concept.

Correct. Should have been lack of trust and/or risk averse. Wanna ... oops ... Would you like to call me out on anything else?

The distinction is an important one Ronny and has nothing to do with calling anyone out. My emphasis is on performing due diligence to reduce the possibility of something untoward happening. Bad actors can definitely create a chill that will make folks even more cautious, which certainly is not a happy occurrence for those who've established their bona fides by handling transactions responsibly. But everyone should be using common sense and this thread came into being because unknown actors have been game playing WTB listings. I like to believe a word to the wise is sufficient. Be careful that you know something about your transaction partner before sending money...

p.2 #5 · Trolling the Buy and Sell Board

All of these are indeed valid points.
I have made well over 250 buys and a few sells on eBay (and have been a member there for over 14 years). I have bought items costing thousands of $$ and never have been burned yet (knock wood).
I recently have made some purchases on here and on POTN board as well. Although I have been a member of both the later boards for a little while I have never bought anything until that past week or so.
I have co-operated fully and used the "gift" feature on Pay Pal to pay for items since they did not know me. I hope that someday my stellar payment reputation will be known here as well. Whenever I win or but something on any board I pay within seconds of the deal closing. I would just hate to think I lost out on an item I wanted here or on POTN because my B&S ratings were low. That is also a problem which is inherent on all boards...when you don't get any feedback from someone you have purchased items from. I have bought VERY expensive items and the seller to this day has never left feedback. We all know now by this very thread how important that feedback is.
Trust but verify. I am working to gain your trust and hope that comes to pass.

I established my reputation completely through purchases. Of course, I was building my kit so adding gear was in order. It was quite some time before I sold anything on the board. Having demonstrated that I was trustworthy made selling easier.

I always ask for feedback, telling my partner in the transaction that feedback is worth gold on this website. Buying from people who already have feedback likely improves the odds of your partner posting feedback for you. They already know its value.

Good luck Rob!

I don't get the people who buy and sell all of the time. Do they have websites or Facebook? Any pics of what they do with the stuff other than buy low and sell high? I like to see my used stuff go to a photographer.

p.2 #8 · Trolling the Buy and Sell Board

Saw this thread and as a newer member thought I would post my thoughts.

I recently decided to sell my D3100 to a friend and was looking for a second D7000. My wife always criticizes me as being cheap, but I typically spend months researching and looking for the best prices prior to purchasing new equipment.

That said, I had been lurking the FM forums (referred here from Nikon Cafe) and decided that a second D7000 was the direction I wanted to go. I made a few posts for listings for nice D7000 bodies, and PM'd the sellers of the listing.

I can only assume since I am still a new poster to this forum, my PMs were ignored as illegitimate.

Fortunately 1 seller replied and we were able to come to a deal. Best part is, he was local and we met in person!

My point is, while it is usually in your best interest to be leery of some posters credibility. Some of us are in fact legitimate buyers.

Can I ask, as a new person to the forum what some of the things are that you do look for when selling to a new person? Usually when i respond I give them my EBay username so they can look at feedback, but im sure there are other factors involved in the longer time members when evaluating a potential buyer.

cheers,

-Bill

The first thing you want to do Bill is make certain the person from whom you purchased the D7000 gives you feedback. Tell the person you recognize that positive feedback is important for both buyers and sellers. You will, of course, give feedback to the seller.

E-Bay experience may be of interest, but people have been known to hijack E-Bay accounts and as a seller I'd likely not spend a great deal of time satisfying myself that a buyer without feedback here is legitimate. You don't have an email account listed and when I check your Facebook link it tells me you're unavailable. Those aren't good signs. I say that because who you are is the most important matter when you don't have feedback. You note for example that many members are very forthcoming about their names. William above uses his full name as his username, I use my first initial and last name. My first name and location are listed in my profile. I'm also quite active on other boards here. That is a good way to become known. Of course, for the first few years although I lurked on other forums my real purpose in being here was to build my kit. FM's Buy and Sell board is one of the best on the internet, so it attracts a great many people who wish to avoid the fees charged on E-Bay. But there is wealth of information on this website and some great people sharing their enthusiasm for gear, their passion for photography and their curiosity about life. You'd likely find some kindred spirits whose work you'd enjoy seeing.

The more we know about you the easier it becomes to do business with you. Welcome and good luck.

To add to my earlier posts, eBay references are immaterial to me. I don't care about them nor do I use them to make a decision on whom to buy from. As I noted earlier, and to echo Curtis, for goodness' sake, find a board whose photographic interests match yours; introduce yourself there; comment on other folks' posts; fill out your profile, including your location, your gear, etc. When you purchase something from someone here, ask the seller to make sure that you get and give feedback. Curtis makes excellants point here. But also be aware that their are some buyers/sellers on FM that are unwilling to leave feedback on a transaction be it good, fair or bad. I don't know why but I have bought and sold items that the buyer/seller, even after numerous requests, will NOT post any feedback for the transaction. All of which went very well, so go figure??

I appreciate your candor. I will go into my profile and update more things, so as not to appear to be a troll on these boards.

Fortunately on my last transaction, i was left positive feedback, which I promptly returned.

I'm not sure why my facebook profile says "unavailable" but i do keep that private, as I dont want my information public to the rest of the internet.

I appreciate the feedback, and am looking forward to my time here.
