Yeah, I might have to if the adjustments do not stick. I've had the camera less than week, but cannot return it now. Even if it were possible, the chances of another like that are high judging from this thread.

I think one reason for these issues is the very high pixel density of the D7K. I think it just goes with the territory, so to speak. Focusing becomes a lot more critical. Just like using good shutter release techniques, or good lenses.

The other 80-200 is not right even at -20 and other lenses also require negative compensation. Is there any way to have a Nikon shop add +10 to everything?

If the AF system is off such that all your lenses need a consistently large MA then they should be able to detect this during servicing and make the appropriate adjustments.

EB-1 -- Sorry to hear this is still an issue.

Why don't you send the D7000 to Nikon for warranty repair? It's not your problem to figure out, it's theirs. I included the 18-105 VR lens when I sent mine, to make sure there was a complete match. Perhaps they would allow you to send one of yours?

Good luck. I hope you get it sorted out.

We deserve better AF from the factory, and I'm not just picking on Nikon. Canon can be off as well. I expect this applies to other brands too.

The good news is that these are all fixable by the manufacturer. When they begin paying me as a test and repair facility, I might try AF adjust on my whole Nikon and Canon collections. Until then, I'll send bodies (and lenses) back that don't focus properly.

Sounds like your body's out of spec, so sending it in under warranty should get everything recalibrated. Will be doing that to mine after the new year (my default fine tune is set to -16, and that's with lenses I know to be within spec).

I didn't need AF tuning on either of my D7000 bodies on any of my lenses, till now. I traded an iPad 2 for a 85mm f/1.8 and some cash recently and that lens needs about -10 or so. But, that's what AF-tuning is for.

I didn't need ANY tuning on my manual focus lenses.

My D7000 had some af issues with the cheaper toy lenses like the kit lens and the 18-105, but after I got rid of those I've had no problem with other lenses.

I don't know about that, do you happen to wear glasses?

Heh.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I was just unlucky with the one I got - the others at university are fine, and it's only with the increase in resolution that the errors can even be picked up. It wouldn't even show oon a lower MP body.

It's funny you mention tuning the MF lenses (it's why I set the default over tuning every individual lens). One of the ways I know it's the body is that the focus confirm light didn't work with Ai-S lenses or PC-E lenses until I adjusted it. It would show in focus images as slightly frontfocused, and show backfocused images as in focus when focusing by eye, and trying out magnified live view focusing confirmed it.

I know I will probably get flamed for this but for the money we spend on bodies and lenses I expect them all to be perfect. I am a bit of a pixel peeper. If they are not perfect they go back to the retailer or get sent to Nikon. In all my years with both canon and Nikon gear I have not had to MA a single lens. I feel if I start now I will not trust my gear.

Bruce -- You won't get flamed by me!

I'm basically in the same boat as you. I've sent back several new and used bodies to Canon to fix either back or front focus after confirming with multiple lenses. I don't know if I've sent back a lens to Canon, but might have. My feeling is that if I have a good set of lenses that are all in spec, they should focus properly on any body. If not, the body needs adjustment. Then I find all the lenses focus!

I've never done micro adjust. Instead, I build a system of bodies and lenses that work together. Any new additions get a thorough going-over, and if found lacking, are sent back under warranty to be fixed. Any used item purchased, I pay out of pocket to fix -- I calculate that into the cost, along with a through Canon inspection and cleaning. (I've done the same with Nikon, which is really where I learned the value of properly calibrated gear, with the wide range of lenses that can be used.)

I know there are some real-world mechanical and optical limitations, and always a slight gap in performance based on tolerences. But that doesn't preclude the opportunity for proper functioning. I do think all manufacturers and owners could benefit by coming up with a better AF system to make any lens focus properly on any body.

The D7000 still does not AF correctly. Now some parts need to be replaced, but they are not in stock. How can a brand new body be such a mess?

I have a D7000 and I did fight it when I first got it, had inconsistent results even tripod mounted. The longer I've worked with it the better the results. I'm with Bruce above, I've never dialed in any MA on any camera body and if it came to that I'd just return the body. During my Canon years my 24-70L was so soft until stopped down past F5.6 it was a joke, had it repaired but that lens never did much for me.

I don't see how the camera would improve with use, unless some part were partially stuck.

Just a stupid question. But will the d7000 automatically switch calibration profiles when I switch lenses provided its a CPU lens? I.E. if I dial my 17-50 in at -7 and my 80-200 in at -10 will the camera differentiate between lenses or will I have to manually select a profile?

I'm glad I found this thread to see I'm not the only one experiencing this. I recently picked up a used D7000 and haven't been satisfied with the focusing. My 80-200 needs +20 and it still not enough. The 35-70mm 2.8 needs -7. I haven't checked my other lens.
