We're currently upgrading our sample studio albums, and are in the middle of a decision that's hard to make. We're currently offering mostly vertical albums, but we've always seemed to like the square looks, so we're getting another album company that offers them square only.
So the question of the year for us is: should we get square albums only with both companies, or should we mix and match between vertical and square?
I don't know if that would be too much confusion for the client. But again, I don't know if they're going to feel like there's less value in square albums when you put them against a vertical album - for example, set side by side an 8x8 against an 8x12.
Your thoughts are greatly appreciated, and your client feedback will also help us make a better decision! Thank you so much in advance!
We offer a 12x12 and 11x14 for the same price. The only thing that changes the price is the number of pages. We usually push the 12x12, and most people prefer them anyways.
I base it on what I want to do with the album. I just did my first vertical album and it came out great and was really easy to design. I think it just depends on the wedding and what the story for that particular wedding was.
All mine have been horizontal because it seems easier to fit a mix of portrait and landscape orientation images but I tend to shoot more pictures in portrait orientation than seems to be the current fashion. I like the left to right viewing experience rather than up and down like a comic book; I cannot for the life of me design in square or vertical.
I'd love to see an example of a verticle layout design. I completely don't think that way, so it just seems so strange to me. I definitely see more square (which leads to full horizontal spreads).
Thanks everyone for your input. I realize I didn't put "horizontal" on the voting part, and most of you seem to like either horizontal or square, but never vertical.
Could some of you kindly share your horizontal / square samples?
Until last year I only did verticals. Every magazine is a vertical - and if you open the album, you get a moderate landscape format - like a tv screen or the human field of vision.
You can see some sample albums at http://www.euerfotograf.de/ . Select "Buch" and choose an album. You have to grab the corners and flip the pages. Yes, I know itīs cheesy - but it is easy to do in Indesign
Now, if you see the spread of two vertical pages - it is the same like one horizontal page. Just more condensed and easier to view without the need to look left and right.
This year I started with square albums because it is easier to change suppliers - an meet customer wishes. I dnīt like layouting in a square, though...

Vertical can be very easy to design if you are using a book that does not have a split spread. I wouldn't use it for books that do have a split though.
Most magazines have a vertical format. If you use the entire spread then it works quite well with the file format.
I use an entire spread with no splits or seam lines so everything is continuous. We're going to probably have to launch square and will try horizontal one day. I just find horizontal so large when you open a 12x16 book you need a very large table. In any case, thank you for the votes, I'm still open to opinions, they all count very much
