Bravo, Wilhelm!

I don't know when I've seen two more diverse architectural shots next to each other, with similar color palette, than yours and mine! One, rounded and soft, the other, all sharp contrasty bits.

Brilliant shot!

Hehe, I believe you're right Gunzorro - different indeed.

Thanks for kind words too!

R.Young - nice "straws" (?) :-) What do you think about that lens, it's a C/Y 100/2 right?

Thank you for the replies and your time.

The more I read, searching on Google, about large .tiffs and Win7, I see there is a widely known bug/problem in Win7, and MicroSloth knows about it also.
The "file exploder" will consume 100% memory, yes, I have the preview pane OFF, and the search indexer OFF.
As I've said, this is a known problem in Win7, that did not occur under Vista, nor XP.
I now use Q-Dir to navigate about.
Seems to work good.
Bridge works good too, just have to increase the cache size.

Anywho, my system is a Dell XPS17 laptop, Intel Core i7-2670QM - 4 cores, 8GB RAM.
My GPU is a 3GB nVIDIA GeForce GT 555M.
My current settings in Win7-64 is for an custom managed initial paging file of 8386MB, and a max of 24258MB.
The ONLY Visual Effects selected is smoothing edges of screen fonts, all the other eye candy waste is turned OFF.
My CS5 settings are, let PS use 5334MB, 75% of RAM. Hmm, might increase that?
PS scratch disk is C:, hmm, maybe an SSD would help?

My current stitching experiment is a 42 image stitch from a 5DmkII using a Mamiya 645 120mm f4 Macro, 19907x12543 pixels, 249.69MP, 2.063GB .tiff file generated from MS ICE, an app which I really like.
Opening this file in PS-CS5 results in constant HDD usage, it does open, and I can even eventually get Topaz Denoise 5 to process the file, though, this is far too time consuming.
And then, I'm worring about my drive usage/lifespan.

As I have been pondering the purchase of a digital medium format system, I am not interested in 8bit files, thanks.
I can only wonder in amazement what system is needed to do this type of work.

Guess I need a 16GB+ mega desktop to do what I want?
Sigh...

Hello,
What is everyone using to edit your panos with?
I am asking for both hardware and software wise.
I recently upgraded from an old Dell 4gb RAM XPPro laptop to a new Dell 8gb Win7-64 XPS17 laptop.
A very good upgrade for me!
I use PS CS5 and LR 3.6, 64 bit versions.
Oh, I use MS ICE for pano work, I like it a lot.
This enables me to now to save layered .tiff files, rather than flattening each step.
However, I am very disappointed in the way Win7-64 handles large .tiff files.
This is a widely known problem, when searching via Google.
M$ knows the of this

I dont!...There is no point wasting memory and precious processing time by saving as huge Tiff files if you are working from RAW files...Once I process my RAW files I always save the results as maximum quality jpgs (no compression). That way they are FAR quicker to browse through and work on. Especially when making big panos!
Besides I can always go back and reprocess individual files later, for printing say, if ever I feel the need.
BTW, my pano software I use is APG Kolor Autopano Giga...Basically its the latest version of Autopano Pro.

and a few stitches with the contax g 45/2 on the NEX-3 all between 20 and 50 shots i believe:

Question: How are you doing your actual photography? Are you using a gigapan of some stripe to go through those or manually taking 20-50 shots.

everything is done manually while handholding the camera. i usually decide where i want the framing boundaries to be and then shoot rows or columns of shots (depending on the shape of the final image i want) to cover a bit more than i need. i process the one raw with the most dynamic range and then apply those settings to all other shots and send the tiffs to PS or hugin to stitch them.

Wow, that is some phenomenal light! Was it slightly foggy?

I can't believe you were able to manage so many shots in such light; I would have thought that the light would change too quickly in such conditions.

thanks! there was a low hanging fog and it was relatively late in the morning (~9:30) so the light wasn't changing to fast.

here's what the fog looked like when you aren't looking directly into the sun:

RustyBug,
Give Microsoft ICE a try.
It's free, and has many options available.
Easy to use also.

I am still marveling over these handheld shots. In particular, I am quite amazed that you managed to avoid parallax issues. Maybe it's easier with a mirrorless, but with my 5D, I find it very hard to shoot somewhat close subjects without introducing parallax problems. This is probably because despite my effort I am not rotating my camera along its nodal axis.

Are you shooting vertical or horizontal shots?

i'm not that close as it is a 70mm equiv focal length. i find that in general if the subject is more than 10ft away photoshop has no trouble.

most of these are horizontal orientation. when i'm aiming for a squarish final image i shoot horizontal, when i'm aiming for a long image i shoot vertical. also, if there is a lot of sky i shoot vertical so i can anchor more of the image to the horizon. PS seems to have trouble stitching shots that contain only sky (hugin seems a bit better in this regard).
