Has anyone owned or used both? What made you prefer one over the other? While I have never used a hand strap before I am looking for something compact in order to fit in my Retrospective 5 while I am out shooting.
I have several Camadapter hand straps and greatly prefer quality leather over ballistic nylon hand strap pads. I don't own he Cotton Carrier hand strap but stayed away since I don't like the feel of rough fabric on the back of my hand. The Camadapter strap is 100% leather (unlike the E-1), handsome, sturdy and well made. However it's a bad choice if you need to regularly remove the hand strap: requires use of scotch tape and a straw to draw the webbing through the pad to install.

Not sure what the heck you're doing but I've never had a problem putting on or taking off my Camdapter strap. Never had to use anything but my fingers to do it.

Not sure what kind of fingers you have (must be really slender) but I have the Camadapter HS webbing threaded through a RRS L-plate, through the leather pad, looped through the top camera lug and secured to the wee buckle. You can easily remove the nylon webbing from the top lug by loosening the buckle and pulling it back through the lug. However, to remove it from the L-plate you have to pull the webbing out from the pad's tunnel--an easy and quick task. The challenge is taping the webbing to a straw and drawing it through the pad when you reinstall. It ships with instructions and the straw already taped to the webbing.
However, you can remove the entire L-plate with Camadapter hand strap attached and not have to do the straw and tape dance. But that would be silly unless selling the camera or giving up on tripods.
I have a Herringbone hand strap on my 7D and it is easily removed without unscrewing the plate or use of straws or other special tools. Not as comfy as the Camadapter HS but a more thoughtful design in all other ways.
Thanks, guys. That tape and straw thing sounds rather odd and would possibly be a deal breaker for me. I will check out the Herringbone.
I have even considered a sling with disconnects where I could disconnect it to put the camera into the Retro 5 and the sling into the front pocket of the bag. Luckily I still have 6 months before crunch time (my 2.5 wk visit to Japan).
Cotton Carrier : I have and use the whole CC system from time to time, including the hand strap. I have no idea why anyone would think it 'rough'. At least I have never noticed it to be so and I'm not a manual labourer with tough skin.
That said there are a whole plethora of hand straps out there and more than most certainly look capable of doing the job.

Ballistic nylon or polyester against my bare skin is not nearly as comfy as soft leather. Also the velcro of the CC hand strap constantly was snagging/sticking to the interior of my camera bag.
