I have a very old but excellent condition Nikon Polarizing Filter 52mm and the Nikon HN12 two piece hood that was made specifically for the "original" Nikon Polarizer.
Here is what B&H Photo's description of the HN12 hood says:
"This screw-in lens hood was originally intended to be used only in combination with the original(and now discontinued) Nikon 52mm circular polarizer filter. It will not fit on new type "II" circular polarizer filters, but it can be used with 60mm threaded polarizing filters in conjunction with the AF-1 52mm Gelatin Filter Holder for 3 x 3" Filters. Simply screw your 60mm polarizer in front of the AF-1 filter holder, and then screw this hood into the front threads of the 60mm polarizer."
So, I have the old Nikon Polarizer which has been discontinued. What's the difference between my old one and the newer "type II circular polarizer" mentioned in the quote from the B&H website? Is the newer one better?
basically this is a neat way to not have to stick your fingers inside the hood to rotate the polarizer. you just use the special hood and polarizer combo and rotate the hood and it drags the polarizer with it , sweet
I have the older CP as well as the newer version. Functionally as a polarizer I don't see much difference though the newer one appears to be more neutral in color tint to my eye. The biggest benefit to the newer one is that it is useful on a variety of lenses that use their own hood. The HN-12 hood can vignette on wide lenses. However, as the previous poster indicated, the older style is easier to adjust. I haven't used my older one since getting the newer version several years ago, so that might just say something.

The primary difference is that the Type II is a much thinner ring, and the front and back threads are the same diameter and pitch. The older type is a much heavier construction with thicker rings and a stepped front thread.
The new Type II allows the use of the original dedicated bayonet or threaded lens hood. The older polarizer can not be used with the original lens hood (hence the reason for the HN-12).
