p.1 #1 · 400mm 2.8 Help please

I am currently looking at several used 400mm 2.8 lens used.

Do any of you know what the difference is between the MK I and the MK II. I haven't been able to find any information about either of the lenses. I have found several of these lenses made in the early 90's and I am wondering about the quality vs. the lenses made in the late 90's.

Is the image quality comparable? Were there autofocus problems with the older version? What has been your experience?

Thanks for all your help, and if you do happen to have one of the lenses for sale drop me a line.

There is a *significant* difference between MK I and MK II. The MK I lens is not all that great. It's far from tack sharp and should be avoided. This was a real lemon in Canon's lens lineup..... which is why they replaced it with the MK II and eventually the IS verison. You will be fine with the MK II or the IS version.

that's pretty funny.
I'm as picky as it gets and I have a Vers. I 400 2.8L and LOVE IT.
It's sharp as tack and sharp with both type II TC's....

Not all were lemons thats for sure.

Try it out and if you don't like it, don't buy it.

I wouldn't be so hasty in saying they we're all Lemons Ben.
How many of them did you own?

Yes, the newer version have imporvements, or they wouldn't have put them out. The type II is about 1.8 lbs lighter and the newest has IS obvisously.
My friend has the tyep II NON IS and mine's every bit as sharp. We shot tests and compared them.

I know John E has the IS version, but he and I haven't done a test for it.

There are Sharp type I lenses out there and you can probably find a good deal on one too.
Like I said, just test it out first.

Kurt

all the work here is with a Canon type I 400 2.8L and type II TC's...

Kurt --- All the people I've talked to who have owned this lens (4) have said that it was a dog of a lens compared to the newer versions. Seems like more than coincidence to me. I've also read a lot of stuff online to comfirm what I've heard in person.

I have to agree with Kurt. I have shot hundreds of photos with the series I and it is one fantastic lens. The major difference between the two seems to me to be that extra 1.8lbs. Its probably better to buy the older one and lose 1.8lbs of body fat. lol
