p.1 #1 · External/portable SSD on Fuji GFX100II?

(comparable post on DPR)

This Fujirumors article mentions portable SSD' s that are suitable for connecting directly to the GFX 100II:

https://www.fujirumors.com/fujifilm-gfx100-ii-best-ssd-for-external-recording-as-officially-recommended-by-fujifilm/

My questions:

- is it possible to copy files (or move them), from CF-express card in the 100II directly to such a portable SSD (maybe after a day shooting while traveling)? So, just by connecting the SSD to the camera. No laptop or anything else to copy to.
Maybe it' s just to record images while shooting??
-If so: how do you set it in camera?
- I think about getting a OWC Envoy Pro FX external SSD. This SSD is not in the article mentioned before. Does anyone have experiences with this SSD in combination with the Fuji GFX100II?

Thank you!

As far as I know, external recording to SSD is for video only.

The manual says yes:

"Copy pictures between a card in the first slot, a card in the second slot, and an SSD connected to the USB connector."

Thank you. Could be, but why do you think so?

Thank you. Correct. That’s what I read on the internet as well, but I can not find any information about how te do this. I don’t have a portable ssd yet, so I can’t try myself.

The links I posted are to the manual and describe the steps.

Thank you snapsy and Mujabad123 - I didn't know this was possible but just tested it with my 100 II and an old Sandisk SSD I had lying around before the news broke of the reliability issues. Worked just like it said it in the manual linked above, from the Lexar Diamond CF-B in the camera.

That's a really cool feature. I can see wedding stills photographers using a cage to keep an SSD attached just for the nearly unlimited storage or to backup images at various intervals. The ultimate setup would be to have the ability to have photos written to all available media at the same time for backup purposes = both cards + SSD.

Agreed. It's certainly a step above Panasonic's external USB support on the S5 IIX, which supports only internal media or the SSD one at a time, with no copy support between the two. SmallRig makes an SSD holder that can be mounted to a hot/cold shoe adapter:

It's not in the compatibility external SSD chart (and so tested as "Operation confirmed External SSD"), shown here https://fujifilm-x.com/global/support/compatibility/cameras/list-of-supported-memory-cards/#ssd ,
I wonder if someone uses the OWC Envoy Pro FX with the GFX100II.

I can not try it in store and would have to order it through the internet. But then I would have to be absolutely sure that it works ofcourse.

Follow up on this older thread.
So far I did not buy an external SSD. Jim Kasson (on DPReview), has had bad experiences with OWC external SSD (overheating). So, I'll probably settle for another SSD that is mentioned in the Fuji list (link in my first post here). The Samsung T7 Shield 2Tb could be a good one.
Apart from shooting images straight on this SSD with a Fuji GFX100II, I'm now thinking about the possibility of using that SSD as an external backup when travelling. I' ll be away from home during the whole month of October.

Whenever I have time, or when CFExpress card is nearly full, I could then connect the SSD to the camera with the cards inserted in camera....and copy all files from the CFExpress card (or SD card), straight to SSD. After that:
1. turn off camera.
2. disconnect SSD.
3. Start camera up again and
4. format cards
Still in doubt a little, but that should work, right?

It’s a really cool feature that one can copy files from the cards to an ssd using the camera but be aware that with your described workflow you are not backing up your images but rather moving them from the cards to the ssd.

Thank you. You're right. In that case, I should not format the card after copying files to SSD (so I keep files on both card AND SSD). I might buy a second CFExpress card then. If only they where a bit cheaper;-)

Wish I read this thread before my recent trip. I now plan on adding another SSD to my travel kit to provide a true back-up solution. Copy files from cards to drives, format drives providing more space!

What had happened on my trip was the laptop died. (thank you Singapore Airlines) The cards in the 100s were approaching capacity, so I was on the hunt for 'large and fast' SD cards. Too much time was invested in finding just one card. It did save the day, but I had a SSD in my bag the entire time.

Is this the longest time a member has taken after joining the forum and posting their first message?

It seems that not every external ssd is suitable for this (see the link in one of my posts here). Fuji speaks about “operation confirmed SSD”, which doesn’t exclude others ofcourse. It also seems that a ssd from this list can only have a max capacity of 2Tb (also mentioned in that link).Don’t know for sure and don’t know why (I’d rather use a larger ssd and maybe one that isn’t mentioned by Fuji).
I’ve send a mail to Fuji with questions about all this. Also asked if more SSD’s are going to be “tested” with the GFX100II.
No answer yet.

By the way…..I use the GFX100II….not the 100s. That Fuji list is for the 100II and the 100SII. I don’t know about the 100S, but maybe someone else knows.
