p.1 #1 · Does the P900 have a rebate because a new printer is coming?

I see that the Epson P900 has a $200 rebate until the end of the month. Some of the time, rebates are offered when a manufacturer is about to introduce a new model. Are there any rumors or expectations that Epson is close to replacing the P900?

Whereabouts is the P900 in the normal marketing lifecycle for printers?

I am asking because I am thinking of replacing my Canon Pro-100 with a P900, but I could also put off doing this for a while.

Thanks!

Epson seems to replace/update it's printers every 5 years and I believe the P900 has been on the market for about 3 years. So, not likely due to be replaced anytime soon.

Also, I encourage you to read reviews of this printer as many owners have had a lot of paper feed issues. Compared to its predecessor, the P800, it seems flimsy.

Epson might be trying to move P900s out before this becomes available:

The 5370 is a production machine, able to make prints all day long. It has built in roll paper capability and a cutter. It is not a competitor to the consumer p900. Hell of a printer though.

The P900 weighs about 35 lbs whiile the P5370 weighs about 120 lbs and comes on a pallet. But they are both 17" printers.

Most of the paper feed problems that I have read in comments by users seem to have to do with thicker papers or papers with some curl to them. There seems to be a hard-to-find printer setting that deals with the thicker papers and the curl is a matter for the user to solve.

Does this fit what you see and hear?

Yes, to some degree. The driver for my P800 allows me to adjust the paper thickness and the platen gap, if needed. I expect the driver for the P900 has this as well, which I expect would fix most paper feed issues. I always gently bend down the corners of any of my thicker papers as well. However, the problems go beyond paper feed issues.

I was at my local camera store last week, buying paper actually, and had a chat with their printer/paper specialist salesperson. He told me that the store no longer recommends the P900 as they have had too many customers with paper feed ssues, parts breaking, printers coming out of the box broken, etc. and thus wanting to return the printer. Their feeling is that Epson wanted to make the printer lighter, smaller and easier to use but went too far, resulting in an ureliable product. They have told Epson this but will Epson respond? They haven't so far.

They now recommend the Canon Pro 1000 to those in the market for a 17" printer. However, the Pro 1000 was released the same year as the P800 (2015) and is expected to be replaced this year. If you can wait, do so.

Or you can look at the P5370, which is built on the chassis of the P5000 but with the print head and ink set of the P700/900. The P5000 is a tank, very reliable and the 5370 should be no different. More money though.

Indeed, granted. However, when my P800 joins the choir eternal I'm not going to replace it with a P900 given all the problems. I'd rather spend 2X the money and receive my printer on a pallet, assuming the P5370 is not a dud. Getting it installed down the basement is another issue .

Agreed. My hope is that my P800, which was 8 years old last September, lasts another couple of years. By then, Canon should have released the successor to the Pro 1000, Epson may have replaced the P900 and if not, we'll know by then if the P5370 is as good as the P5000.

BTW, Keith Cooper's YouTube channel has a number of reviews on the P5300, as the P5370 is called in Europe and other markets.

Consumer printers like the P900 having rebates is the norm. I think it's only when the new model is released, or there's a severe shortage (from the pandemic), that the manufacturers don't give out rebates. I remember when I got my pro-100, it was basically free with the rebate and paper they gave you.

I see there's a new lineup of larger Canon's at B&H, so I'm assuming they will roll down to the pro-1000 replacement, or at least I hope so.
