p.1 #1 · Would you pair 35GM with 50mm?

I have a long run with 35mm primes. Started with Voigtlander 40 1.2 with A7III in 2020, I really like that focal length and rendering, but as I've taken photos of my kids I wanted AF. So I purchased a used 35 1.2 DN in last octobre and it was as magic for me as 40 1.2 back in 2020, 40 1.2 has dreamy, shallow DOF images and 35 Art with better bokeh, sharpness with eye AF. Also I step a little back in background separation, Voigtlander as I know more like 42mm with 1.2 and Sigma is 35 (maybe bit longer) with 1.2. Of course not that much difference. In december there were a quite good deal for 35GM so I gave a try, my only concern with 35 Art was the size and weight, and that lens indeed gets subjects attention, not a stealthy type of glass. 35GM is a kind perfection, ideal size for my new A7RIV, sharpness, rendering, but also a bit step backward in background separation. So with two step I gain the most versitale 35mm lens, but somehow miss that special, artistic look of 1.2 lenses. I'm aware not much difference compared 35 1.2, but I feel some kind of spice missing from the soup. First wolrd's problem but I'm considering following options:

-Still considering to keep 35 1.2 and sell 35GM, but most time I just want to pick the GM because of the size.
-Sell 35 1.2 and get Voigtlander 40 1.2 (there is a used in good price), however I prefer to have different focal length
-Sell 35 1.2 get used Voigtlander 50 1.2 if I find in good price.
-Sell 35 1.2 and buy 50 1.2GM new or used. My other prime is 20 1.8, and as in the previous option the only drawback (if not concern with price) 35 and 50 may too close.

I think about 50mm because it's closer to 40 1.2 than 35mm and maybe enough different focal length to 35mm. I considered 24+50mm kit but I can't give up 35, if I have to grab one lens 35mm it is. Best option would be 40 1.2 in GM size and sharpness with AF, but that lens not exists. I have Samyang 75 1.8 but that focal length gets rare usage, maybe sometime I'll upgrade for 85 DN or GMII. Also have 65 APO (I got for 40 1.2), and I like it for MF and rendering, perhaps an 50 1.2 Nokton can replace it, only problem MF is impossible shooting kids.

p.1 #2 · Would you pair 35GM with 50mm?

I was going through the same decision. My 35 GM has been my primary lens that has always stayed in my kit. If I need wider, I have a 20 G which is a great little lens even though I don't use it often.

I recently decided to add a 50 to my kit as I do think there is enough difference between 50/35. I tried the 50mm f/1.4 GM, which is about the same size as the 35 GM but returned it. I opted for the 50 f/1.2 GM for the wider aperture since I plan to use the 35 as my general purpose lens and the 50 for portraits, family, etc.

I was considering another 85 which makes a typical 20/35/85 combo, but the 50 is much more universal compared to an 85, and I have a 70-200 GM II for when I need something longer. I also tried a 24 GM, but I prefered 20/35 over 24 especially since I really like the 35 GM.

I ended up with 20 G, 35 GM, 50 f/1.2 GM and 70-200 GM II which covers me for about anything other than wildlife (200-600G for that). As it turns out, the 50mm f/1.2 is one of my favorite lenses, and I only wish I bought it sooner. I have a grandson on the way, so looking forward to using it more.

This is the where is 28 GM -question

I own 35 GM and 50/1.4 GM but usually I take just another one with me. 24-70 GM II plus another of the "normal" GM primes is practical combination.

Taking both 35 GM and 50 GM is sensible when photographing portraits or similar. It is surprising how much more tele the 50mm is compared to 35mm. 28mm and 50mm would make a better combination, though. I have also 24 GM, but using it for people photography does not feel natural for me.

I'd like 40mm 1.2GM. It'd never happen because of the 35GM. 35mm has wide lens look for me, 40mm has normal lens look, but same time not too tight for indoor as 50mm. I don't want to complain having 35gm, but if I have to pick a perfect most used lens than 40 1.2 it is. Unfortunatery 40 1.4 Art is huge, still not 1.2, so I don't wonder why is Voigtlander 40 is so popular.

The Sony 50/1.2 is a great lens, but it is a bit heavy, not in the Sigma 35/1.2 class, but getting there.

You might take a look at the Samyang 45/1.8 tiny lens. I have been very pleasantly surprised by its rendering, colors, and general visual qualities. It is very light, small, and inexpensive. The one thing with Samyang lenses is that you have to test the copy you get when you receive it to make sure it is within acceptable limits and you have to only buy them someplace where it is easy enough to return them.

I had the same dilemma before I went on a recent trip to Japan.
I already had the 35GM which practically lived on my camera. I previously owned the Zeiss 50mm 1.8 and had sold it but still missed having a 50.
Picked up the 50GM 1.4 and I think it pairs nicely with the 35 - perfect for when you want more bokeh, subject isolation.

I have both the 35 and 50 (1.2) GMs and use one or the other for much of what I shoot. The 50 is noticeably heavier, but its rendering is just incredible. If you frame a subject similarly, their rendering is also quite similar (once you adjust to a comparable relative aperture on the 50).

I agree that the 35GM doesn't quite have the same "spice" as the CV. I think two lens options are ok to own in the 35-50mm range, as long as they both get use and aren't too similar. You might have different qualities you want for different occasions, whether it's perfect AF, or shallow DoF, or ultimate sharpness, or focal length look, or small size.

I had the Zeiss 55/1.8 and sold it once I bought the 35GM. I never bothered with the 55 anymore, as the 35GM replaced it in use. I also have the VM 40/1.2 on Techart adapter, which is more different compared to the 35GM. One smaller, one larger. One with the best AF, one with OK AF. One with more DoF and beautiful rendering, etc. You get the idea.

I would say, go with:

35GM + Voigtlander 50/1.2 (or 40/1.2)
or
Sigma 35/1.2 + Sony 50/1.4 GM

FWIW, I also have the Sigma 85/1.4 DG DN and it is a stellar lens to pair with either of the 35's or CV40. It mostly removes my desire for a fast 50 in between, so you may look to just upgrade that one first!

I went 35/65 for awhile and did like that setup. I had a 135 as well nice gapping there. Than 24 and wider

We have the same lenses! They are all fantastic.

To the OP: I would sell the Sigma 35 and get the 50/1.2GM. There is no other lens quite like it and it always delivers. Don’t forget crop mode! If you carry the 35GM and 50/1.2GM, you get: 35/1.4, 50/2, 50/1.2, and 75/1.8. The 50/1.2 is outstanding as a family and portrait lens. The 35/1.4 works well as an overall carry lens.

Sounds like you would like the 50/1.2GM. For me the Sigma 35 would be too heavy, but if you like it might as well keep it. From my understanding the sigma beats the GM In rendering and maybe sharpness. I have both the 35GM and 50GM, but if I were looking for another prime I would do a bigger gap like 85mm.

Logical is 85mm after 35, also I have Samyang 75 1.8, but rarely use it, I shoot most time 35-50mm range (normal focal length). I've got used to 40 1.2 background separation, and sometimes miss it from 35GM, of course it is better lens almost every way. I'm debating between 50 1.2GM, 50 1.4GM and Voigtlander 50 1.2.
35 1.2 Art is the very best 35 for me, I find little too heavy and long for general purpose/walk-around lens. I can't even fit into my PD 3L sling with camera, I'd accept it with 2-3cm shorter length and 200-300g lighter weight.

This is very close to my own favourite setup:

Viltrox 16mm
Voigtländer 35mm Apo Lanthar
Voigtländer 65mm Apo Lanthar
Batis 135mm

These lenses space extremely well (horizontal field of view):
96.7 degrees - 54.4 degrees - 31 degrees - 15.2 degrees
(Factor: 1.8-1.8-2.0)

Maybe I'm insane but considering keep both Sigma 35 1.2 and Sony 35 1.4GM. I think I'd regret sell one or another. I love GM because off all-round versatility, good balancing size on A7RIV, contrast, sharpness and love 1.2 Art because of that background blur with insane sharpness at f1.2. Most time I'd pick the GM, but when go out mainly portrait shooting definitely want grab the Sigma.
Also I think I go with 50 1.2GM, I wonder if it can replace the 35 1.2. I'll wait till spring just to see what kind of 85GM coming out before I make my final decision.

Well, you've got a point . They are different after all, you can take 35GM nearly everywhere but 35/1.2DN will give you nicer backgrounds in demanding scenarios.
As for 50/1.2GM, it's great, most probably better than 35DN overall, but it's not 35mm ... so it depends if you can switch to 50mm framing.
If you like 35mm, there's also Laowa Argus 35/0.95 ... but it's more of a vintage look to me.

Fun fact: 35GM+50 1.4GM weight together almost identical to 35 1.2DN. On A7RIV I can crop from 35 1.2 for 52mm eq. 1.8, as I often do. In case of GM's 50 1.4 has better portrait render than cropped 35 1.2 with full resolution, but I have to change lenses.
So:
-With only 35 1.2 Art has superior 35mm portrait over GM, not have to change lenses (I have plenty 26MP resolution in crop mode), but a bit worse rendering compared to 50 1.4. Also the cheapest option as s standalone lens, but I must hold two lenses mass on the body when shooting.
- I see no point pairing 35 1.2 any 50 1.4 lens,
- 35GM + Sigma 50 1.4DN: better portrait rendering at 50mm compared 35 1.2 crop, cheaper 50mm option.
-35GM + 50 1.4GM the twin combination, 50 1.4GM is more than 1,5x price of 50 1.4DN here.
-35GM + 50 1.2GM: I find the most reasonable option, 35GM for most usage and 50 1.2GM for artistic look portraits. Of course 50 1.2GM is even more expensive than 50 1.4GM
-35 1.2 Art + 50 1.2GM: The ultimate portrait combination, also not hiking friendly version. I think it s for a professional wedding photographers best option.
-35 1.2 Art+ 35GM + 50 1.2GM: Ultimate trio, but I think in this case 35 1.2 has almost no use, also I find it a good combination for professionals.

It's quite hard decision still, as I see I defintly want a dreamy-bokeh lens with AF, and definetly want an all-rounder 35mm with good background separation.

If, you're ok with shooting 50mm then 35GM + 50/1.2GM is a good solution. 50GM will give you even more blur than 35/1.2DN while being probably (hard to tell shooting portraits) even sharper. The important thing about 50/1.2GM vs 35/1.2DN is the size & weight difference, I can shoot the former all the time, while the latter does feel a bit long and heavy at times...

I feel for the wider focal length has more dof so if one is getting a f1.2 lens, it’s better at 35mm. The 50mm f1.4 has plenty of subject isolation.

50mm has always been an awkward focal length for me. Not wide or long enough. 35mm has been much more useful and in the past found myself using 24-70's a lot around 35mm. I like primes that "dazzle" and "wow" but never found that in a 35mm prime until I picked up the Sigma 35mm 1.2. It's worth every penny and ever ounce.
