p.1 #1 · Where to store photos on a Mac?

Where is the best place to store photos on a Mac if the photos are just copies that are to be kept only on that computer? I often keep about 200 photo files in folders on my desktop to browse and edit in DXO PhotoLab. These are copies of photos that exist in other storage on an external drive.

I am going to store my Desktop and Documents folder in iCloud, and I don't think I want to take up space by storing photos in iCloud. Where is the best place to move these photos to in order to remove them from my desktop? I have been warned off using Mac Photos because of its idiosyncrasies.

I assume I should just create a folder somewhere, but on a Mac where is a good place to locate that folder?

You can configure what folders iCloud will sync. In addition, by default it won't sync the Pictures folder--if you have it set to sync photos it only syncs the Photos app database which is stored in the Pictures folder. So you can just create a subfolder in your Pictures folder and that shouldn't sync to the cloud.

I don’t keep copies of raw images locally, only on external drives. But if I did, the Desktop is the last place I’d keep them as large files on the desktop can slow performance. As stated, the Pictures folder is a good choice for local storage. I do use Apple Photos and cloud syncing for processed jpegs so I can have images to show and share from my other devices. Works perfectly fine for that.
