p.1 #1 · Cannot autofocus while in self-timer mode

I cannot figure out how to autofocus my Sony a1 when I have the mode set to self-timer. When I attempt to focus it puts up a message "You can change this setting by turning the drive mode dial" The only way I can autofocus is to move to a different drive mode, focus and then return the dial to self-timer. I have the camera set up in rear button focus. I am able to manually focus in self-timer mode. ( The sony manual instructs to set the selftimer mode first and then to adjust the focus and shoot the image.)

Yes, I'm trying to use the AF-on button for rear button focus

Continuous won't work. Set it to AF-S.

That doesn't work unless I focus in AF-S and then change the mode to self-timer.

Just for grins, have you tried returning focus to the shutter button to see if that works?

Yeah, I remembered wrong. It's tracking, that's the issue. Is your back button set to Tracking On + AF On, or is the focus area set to any of the Tracking options, or are you using a Custom Hold with any tracking features turned on?

I'm using the AF-On button for regular AF-On (works in self-timer), and AEL for Tracking On + AF-On (this one will result in the same error you're having).

I'm not with my camera right now, so I can't check, but I think AF-C turns into AF-S automatically when in self-timer, and maybe a selected tracking area also turns into a regular one when switching modes, so that probably isn't the issue.

True. But it still won't let you auto focus if you have back button AF setup. Before I had no problem doing this. It's particularly nice for hand held landscapes. Select self timer in drive mode. Compose and focus, then shoot. Now it just won't let you auto focus at all once you have the self timer engaged. Pretty annoying.

This seems like such a basic feature to overlook. I was trying to take a self portrait yesterday by walking into my focus zone and it wouldn’t work. Unreal.

I think it is same but I have C1 set On my CR as AF on and AF-on Set for tracking AF on. Just AF On works when you have a like a 2 sec timer going. Might be an easier way but this has worked for me.
