p.1 #1 · EIZO ColorEdge CS2731 27" or Apple Studio Display 27"

Hello, everyone I'm looking for a good monitor replacement for my Windows 10 desktop. Would the 5k display benefit anything other than my personal viewing experience? I'm aware that most people that view my photos won't have a 5k display let alone a 4k display. I'm also aware that when printing the photos won't look as good. So should I consider EIZO over Apple? Has anyone here had experience testing both monitors side by side properly calibrated?

Why CG2731 when Eizo already has a 4k (UHD) wide gamut monitor that is CG2740? I personally think on a 27" monitor, 4k is enough but I wouldn't go below 4k. EIZO CG2740 and Apple Studio Display 27" are comparable in price so there's no reason to consider CS2731. This make the resolution difference much smaller than before. So in this regard, I am not sure the Apple monitor is advantageous anymore as the additional resolution may not be noticeable on a 27" monitor (5k vs 4k).

The Apple monitor targets the consumer/prosumer market while the Eizo targets the professional/prosumer photography market. Eizo covers Adobe RGB and has 16bit lookup table and a matte anti glare surface while Apple has a glossy surface and covers P3. If critical color accuracy is important, Eizo is the choice though the Apple display is also probably accurate enough after calibration. Eizo has different types of connections while the Apple monitor only has thunderbolt/USB C so for PC users, Eizi is advantageous. Photographers particularly those who print their photos, have to calibrate their monitor at a low brightness setting and in any case 350 cd/m2 is more than enough unless it is a HDR monitor hence, the brighter Apple monitor has no advantage here.

As a PC user, I would certainly choose the Eizo over the Apple. Now if this were to choose between 32" monitors, I would have cared more about the extra resolution as I feel my 32" 4K (UHD) monitor could have been better (for photography) if it had been 6k. That said, as a (primarily) photographer, color accuracy, Adobe RGB coverage, 10bit color, hardware lookup table should not be overlooked hence Eizo is my choice between these two.

Hello, 27 inches would be ideal for me. I wouldn't find a larger screen useful for editing when having to sit further back. 2K is the sweet spot resolution for a 27-inch screen. If you edit something on a 4k screen and print it out it's likely not going to look as good. It has to do with pixel density. 100 to 110-pixel density will look best on a 27-inch monitor. Thanks for your advice I'll go with Eizo.

What are you basing this off of? I have two different screens. One on my MBP 16" that has 254dpi and one from LG with 110dpi and the screen on the MBP looks much, much better. It's not even close. I don't think it has anything to do with dpi but how good the display itself is.

Eizo would be the clear choice if you're using it for editing. There is no way to properly hardware calibrate any of the Apple displays (instant deal breaker), and glossy screen coatings are generally not what you want unless you edit in the dark (hard on the eyes). Value-wise you are getting more with the Eizo as well, since you aren't paying for the logo or an extra $1000 just for a stand.

As for resolution, keep in mind that not every application scales well with 4K (or higher), so you may run into the occasional compatibility issue. It's also noticeably harder to judge pixel level adjustments such as sharpening on higher resolution displays (especially physically smaller ones). That is why 27" / 1440P is by far the most popular combination.

Another thing to keep in mind is if this computer is used for anything else (such as games) you probably don't want more than 1440P unless you have $2-4K to spend on GPUs alone.

Agree with CanadaMark. I have a 27" 5k iMac next to my 2560x1440p Eizo.
The iMac is gorgeous for viewing images, but for photography (editing/preparing for print/colour accuracy/etc.), I always and only use my Eizo (by the way this is the CG2700S here).
I did use my iMac for photography in the past, but it isn't a match for the accuracy of he Eizo.
Yes, I could have bought the 4k version of my Eizo, but I specifically wanted 1440p. Indeed a better match for a 27" screen.....for photography.
The "normal" setting for a 27" iMac is 2560x1440p (but retina!). That's the native setting for my Eizo.
