p.1 #1 · What's the best solution for remote shutter release?

Hi folks! I'm currently a Nikon shooter and plan to move to Sony. I'm considering A7R iv.
Wondering what's the best solution for remote shutter release. The purpose is simply reducing the vibration when using camera on tripod or using it when the camera is placed somewhere awkward to reach.
From my research it seems like the blue tooth based sony RMT-P1BT remote is closest to what I'm looking for, but I do have concerns:
1. It's bluetooth based and how's the stability of bluetooth?
2. Will it dramatically affect the battery life if you leave the bluetooth open?
3. I really don't need the focus control and focal control, the current remote seems too big in size.

Do we have better solution in Sony world?

For the reference, I used to have RFN-4S remote on the Nikon body, it runs on 2.4Ghz, no cable at all, and very small in size to carry. It also have power switch to save the battery life when you don't need it.

I use the RMT-P1BT and have never noticed any problems with the BT connection or any impact on battery life when using it. I do not leave BT and Remote Control on all the time. I have included both menu settings in a custom menu so it is quick and easy to turn it on when I need it. Also I have never had the remote control battery run down. I don't like that there is no indication of whether the battery is weak and needs to be replaced. Although I have had the remote for ~4 years, I have never had the battery fail. I replaced it once just because I was nervous about having the battery die while I was in the field.

I don't know of a better remote control for Sony.

There are more than a few good and inexpensive IR and Bluetooth remotes as will be listed in this thread. In the end I prefer to use the camera's self timer if all I'm looking to do is reduce vibrations.

On the A7RM2 I can use Sony Imaging Edge together with my smartphone or tablet as a remote control, but I don't know if this works on the more recent models.

I have recently purchased RMT-P1BT after taking a look at most of the options. I am very happy with it and yes there are lesser cost options but in the end I went with the Sony for its reliability.

I also use the Sony Bluetooth remote and I’m a fan. It also has the side benefit of helping with precise focus stacking, without touching the camera, for macro.

A couple of years ago, I bought this inexpensive remote on ebay: AODELAN RMT-P1BTA, made in China of course.
It works without problems.
To conserve power, Airplane mode is on at all times when the remote is not in use.

Thanks everyone. Looks like we have to use either bluetooth or IR.
For IR, did anyone have problem in receiving signal? Curious about how many IR receiver is in the camera body and where are they located.

Just an FYI, when you use the BT remote like the RMT-P1BT you can't have the Sony Imaging Edge phone app transfer geotag/location information (at least one the Sony bodies I have). It's one or the other.

The camera can only support one BT application at a time.

The loss of the IE geotagging is not much of a loss. The last time I tried it, it was an unreliable mess. I use a GPS logger to create a GPX file for use in the LR map module. Less convenient but it works.

The other problem with having BT on is that the camera will not go into power saving mode. It stays active, consuming power, in case of a remote control command. That must impact battery life but I have not noticed it. As I said in a prior post, I only turn on BT while I am using the remote control.

The IR sensors are on the front of Sony cameras, so the operator needs to trigger the camera from the front. There are very small, very cheap (~$10) IR remotes. I used to carry one, but they are so limited and you must aim the remote at the sensor so I stopped using them.

I have the RMT-P1BT and it usually works well though I did just need to replace the battery. I now carry a spare; they are tiny and flat. Lately it has been occasionally erratic, for no reason I can discern. If you use bluetooth, the camera will not sleep so unless you turn it off between shots it is ON! More than once I let it on, put the camera in the bag and found a warm camera with an almost dead battery. When I forget it or if it's just too erratic, I use the delay on the shutter.

An inexpensive JJC BTR-S1 bluetooth remote has worked fine for the limited occasions I needed it. Sony's android app works OK but I seems like it take me much longer to get that to connect versus the bluetooth. I only turn on whatever network service I need while the remote is in use. It will drain some power if running all the time.
