p.1 #1 · 400mm trunk case

Weird question but does anyone know if the CT-402 and the CT-404 are similar in size? I have an AF-S II and no case to store it in. I can’t find the 402 listed anywhere but the 404(VR) I have seen a couple for sale. Would a 404 work?
Thanks.

Not exactly an answer to your question but if you’re looking for a hard case for thr 400 (either one) Monoprice has this case on markdown and it fits my 400/E with my Z9:FTZII attached perfectly

https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=12139&gclid=Cj0KCQjwtvqVBhCVARIsAFUxcRurVAybi077fFZeLKPpu7irVfONySkFLOyzNB3DGbXpx21h3LfBmPUaAkMYEALw_wcB

I don’t use the original Nikon Hardcase

This looks pretty cool, Thank you. How difficult was it to cut the foam padding to fit the lens. I assume the hood fits also?

It's "pluck" foam so don't really need to cut but I did try a few custom cuts with a hot knife. The foam is kinda soft so I do plan to diy-upgrade it in the near future to something thicker and try my hand at a better custom fit but for now this is works just fine.

Just to add on how to "cut" out the shape for the lens. The foam comes in 3 sections (bottom, middle, top). I worked with the bottom layer first by laying the lens/camera combo on it and marked-out with white gaffer tape where i needed to pluck/cut. Take your time and don't over pluck. Pluck-measure-pluck-measure-pluck is better than plucking all at once or too much.

Carl:

I decided on a Nanuk 955 Roller Case.

My 400 f/2.8 fits comfortably with Z9 attached (hood reversed) and there is also room for the D6 and 200 f/2 attached plus other compartments for flash, 70-200 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8 z, batteries and Pocket Wizards.

I now wheel the camera gear to my events and I didn't realize the strain I was putting on my back and shoulder.

The hard case that came with the Nikon 400 f/2.8 sits in the storage locker at studio.

Good luck with your search.
