p.1 #1 · Canon flash on A7IV

I've done some searching here, dpreview, and google, but not found exactly what I'm looking for.

Earlier this year I made the switch from Canon to Sony. I bought an A7IV and 3 lenses. I'm getting ready to sell off all my Canon gear, but I'm wondering if there is any way I can use my flash and triggers on my A7IV.

I have a Canon 430 EX II and Godox X1 wireless triggers for Canon. From what I can tell, it sounds like if I am able to make them work, I'll only have manual mode, no E-TTL. But my main question is if I run any risk of damaging the camera putting either the flash or the Godox trigger on it. I'll likely eventually swap out to Sony compatible gear, but since I don't use the flash very often, I'd be fine just making what I have work for a while if there is no issue doing so. I generally used it in manual mode anyway with my 5DIV, so that doesn't really concern me.

I think with Godox kit you can use a canon flash as a remote flash, but not on a sony camera.

Be careful of sticking that canon on a Sony body. You could fry the electronics

Sell and buy a dedicated unit

Sony has a way different hot shoe interface as well.

If you have a Godox flash that you used with your Canon gear but off the camera via Godox wireless trigger, then you can buy another Godox wireless trigger for Sony. I seriously doubt that what you have will work on your new Sony gear. Like Guy mentioned above, I would think twice to mount a Canon flash directly on your Sony camera.

I know the potential problem used to be high voltage on non canon flashes. Or so people said. So apparently the voltage might not be too high. This guy used 580EX II on A7r3 you might have already looked at this:

I saw something indicating that some older flashes were higher voltage, but that more modern flashes are lower voltage and shouldn't be an issue. But I don't know that for sure.

Yes, I did see that article in my search. That was one of the things that got me thinking I should be able to do it. But since it was specific to the 580 EX II, not the 430 EX II I wasn't positive and hoped to find someone with experience using the 430. But based on that article, it does seem like it should work.

I don't have a Godox flash, just the Canon 430 EX II. But I have the Godox trigger/receiver for Canon.

After reading some other older discussions on dpreview, it sounded like to should work. So I went ahead and put the trigger on a7IV and tested it out. With the flash and trigger set to manual mode, it worked. But the max shutter speed I could use was 1/125 as opposed to the advertised 1/250 for full frame mode.

So, it can be used, but not the best functionality. I think it'll get me by for now.
