I gave this feature a try and I really like it since I wear glasses. Helps me keep a little distance between my glasses and viewfinder on the A1. Also helps me see everything in the frame. Just in case you missed the feature. If you go to the menu, then toolbox pg. 46/52 you will find "Viewfinder Magnification." There you can select Standard or Zoom out. Zoom Out decreases the size of the Viewfinder display. Give it a try.
I assume your correction provided by your glasses exceeds the range covered by the diopter adjustment wheel next to the viewfinder?
Some people do not realize there is one there or that it covers a reasonable range on the a1. I have not seen - though I have not looked for - whether Sony has a separate diopter modifier that can be purchased for the eyepiece. Canon and Nikon had those for their SLRs back when I shot those bodies.
Diopter isn't for correcting the view for eyeglass wearers.
Magnification 'crops' the entire viewfinder view into a physically smaller set of pixels. Our eyes are further back from the viewfinder lens, we only see the middle part of the image...

Exactly. The diopter can allow you not to wear glasses.

I ended up programming one of my custom buttons so I can go from standard to zoomed out depending on what I am trying to focus on. BIF I keep it zoomed out. For static objects sometimes I prefer standard. Great feature though for me anyway.
