p.1 #1 · Sony A1 power on issues after "battery exhausted"
Hey, gang! So I have an issue. I haven't had this camera long and since owning it I have switched to the CF express type A cards. My issue is when the camera dies due to dead battery and I get the "battery exhausted" message. I very often can't power it back on after installing a fresh battery. I don't know if it is the cards or the battery but I often have to remove all of them for what seems to be an eternity before reinstalling them and getting the camera to power back on. I am current on the firmware and am using prograde cards. Is this a known issue and are some of you seeing this happen? Thanks, mike

If sd cards work, then the type A card is probably at fault. I had a bit of problem with the prograde, contacted them & they sent a new card which works fine.

It hasn’t happened to me. However, my shooting operation is different than yours. I am using a battery grip for wildlife and that allows the battery to switch automatically and seamlessly. If I am shooting something else, I keep an eye on the battery power mostly after a long time shooting and if it is getting low, I just replace the battery without the first one getting fully exhausted.

I've managed to have the battery drain on me while shooting two or three times so far and had no issues after installing a fresh battery. For what it's worth I'm using Sony CFE-A cards.

Thanks for the replies! I will keep a better eye on my battery life and hopefully swap batteries before total drain. I just think it's wild that my camera essentially turns into a brick sometimes.

To better relate my issue and what happens: I turned on my camera for a off the whim shoot. Switched on and got a few seconds thru the viewfinder before "battery exhausted" message. Put in fresh battery...and nothing. No buttons do anything at all. So I remove battery and cards and wait. Install all and still nothing. I proceed to get upset and head home. Stop, put in battery with no cards. Powers on and says no cards. Shut down and install cards. Turns on fine and says 100% battery. I can't figure if it is a "wait and see" issue or if it is the cards jamming me up. But my $6500 camera shouldn't brick....ever. let know what ya'll have seen with your rig in this regard

you didn't answer his question about whether it happened with sd cards, but it's probably best to not do further testing that is hard on the battery.
sometimes it's unavoidable... did it retain all of the setup information in the camera menus during this?
one problem might have been if the battery died in the middle of writing to the memory card, in other words it might have somehow locked up the camera.

It is pretty hard to drain the battery all the way since circuitry will shut it down when it hits 20%. I just watched a You Tube video about getting batteries to work after fully being discharged & refusing to take charge because charger doesn't recognize the battery. He just hooked up the bad battery to a good one & let it charge enough for the charger to recognize the battery & charge. + &- need to be correct. If it blows up, I didn't tell you this.

i've seen people claim that putting it in the freezer for 24 hours will bring it back
afaik all lithium-ion batteries have that shutdown circuitry... a big part of the diminished life problem is the internal battery heat that's generated during long charge/discharge cycles.

I don't remeber if this happened with SD cards or not and I'm going to avoid trying to replicate the issue. All info and settings in the camera remained set.
And the thought about it probably being the camera in the middle of something when it dies causes it to lock up is probably right. Thank for the replies!

I'm using Prograde CFEx cards in my A1. I don't often have to switch the battery, but I have had to do it 2 or 3 times and have never run into problems.

I'm pretty sure you don't want to freeze a depleted Li Ion battery...
And do NOT spray water on a burning Li Ion battery! The fire is hot enough to dissociate the hydrogen from the oxygen.

I am having this same issue with the Sony A1. Firmware is up to date, and the issue only began after updating to the most recent firmware.
Basically it says "Battery Exhausted" when I power on the camera. I turn off, and then insert a fully charged new battery. Power back on. It once again reads "Battery Exhausted" which I know cannot be possible.
Anyone know what the problem is and what is the fix?

When the battery exhausted message showed on the screen did you turn the camera off before putting in the new battery ? Just wondering if that may have contributed.

This is purely a guess, but I believe there’s a small internal battery that keeps things like your settings and the clock running while you change batteries.
If that battery is no longer good, maybe that’s causing the camera to throw up an error message
Like I said, just a guess. Hope you get things sorted
