p.1 #1 · Remote Switch for R5

I have a Canon RS-80N3 Wired Remote Switch that is supposed to work with the R5.
However, it triggers the AF and exposure but doesn't fire the shutter.
When I search the Canon site for a remote switch this unit comes up.
It worked on my 5D MK III and IV.
Am I missing something here?

Mine works fine with the R5 although I still use the back button focus. It must be some setting or maybe the cable or switch is defective. (One of my old RS-80N3 eventually stopped working for shutter release.)

The shutter release switch has 2 positions. Half press engages what you describe, full press releases shutter. Either you're not pressing the button hard enough or your remote is broken.

Well if it works on his 5D then chances are it's not the trigger that's broken but rather the camera. I am pretty certain it's feasible for the port to be defective. May not happen often but someone has to be the "lucky one".

If it _worked_ on the 5D (past tense) then of course it's possible that the switch broke in between. It would be important to do some A/B testing, either the same trigger with another camera, or the same camera with another trigger.

As he did use the past tense, I assumed he no longer had the 5 cameras to test. It is definitely possible that it's the port, but I'm a half-full kind of guy and think it far more likely to be the remote. An aftermarket remote can be had for under $15, so that is the direction I would go. If he had a method of testing, I assume he would have done so before posting. I could be wrong, it's happened before...

Thanks guys. It appears the switch is intermittent. Today, works sometimes on 5D4, nearly always on 7D2, and never on R5. Gonna chuck it and go wireless.
Thought for a while that it was the R5 since it worked on others, but I guess it was on the way out and finally quit.

Of course, it's dependent on what you shoot, but with the features the R5 has, I have found I haven't needed a remote release at all for my shooting - 2s timer for most long exposures, and I use the bulb timer for bulb exposures since then I don't need to time things myself anyway. When doing shots with me in them, wireless via the phone app works well.

FWIW I am using the wireless remote BR-E1 and it works fine, except that you cannot operate the zoom function on the 100-500L for some strange reason.

I have a Canon RS-80N3 remote that doesn't work on the R5 as well! That remote works just fine on the 5D Mark 2, 3, 4, but will not trigger the shutter on the R5. I've since tried 3 other 3rd party wired shutter releases and they all work fine with the R5. So it's only combination of Canon RS-80N3 and R5 that doesn't work.

That is really strange. Long ago I lost my RS-80N3 and picked up a few cheap ebay knockoffs for like $5 each. They still work fine on all my cameras incl. the R5.

My Canon RS-80N3 triggers R5 shutter fine with no problem at all.

if you have the back button focus enable the remote will not work, set the regular button to focus and metering and the remote will work properly

I believe this may be an issue with the switch going bad. I have one for my 5D3 that worked for years. But now, it does exactly what you are describing. Everything works but the shutter.

I bought a wireless remote on Amazon that works well, and has a bunch of different timer and interval modes. It was like $40.

Love using my pair of Yongnuo YN-603II's as a remote.
