p.1 #1 · EDU discounts at B&H and item availability
Just curious...I have an order in at B&H for a lens (100-400 GM) that is shown as "in stock" in regular (nondiscounted) configurations e.g. with filters, etc. But as an isolated lens-only purchase at EDU discount the same lens is listed as "more on the way" but not currently shipping (2-4 weeks).
My chief concern is this: Is gear sold at EDU discount different in any way than new gear sold at full price? Is EDU-discounted gear used? Returned/repackaged? In-store demo model? If that's the case I'd rather just purchase at the non-discounted price. It seems like the lens is either in stock or not if all things (other than the EDU discount) are equal.

Have not experienced this. EDU gear should be the exact same - sometimes they do wait 6-12 months before new lenses are eligible (35 GM still isn't). I suspect if they have low stock/ limited supply, retailers won't offer the discount.

I've hunted on B&H before for EDU items, and I think it's more just resource allocation and deals they make with manufacturers. I.e. they can only sell X% of them inventory at the EDU price and everything else has to be sold full price. That's what would make sense from a business perspective.

I guess I should be grateful. It gives me time for my GAS to dissipate and cancel the order

I have found no such issues dealing with Focus for EDU. I've used both and its worth comparing the EDU prices, too. However, I skip Adorama due to customer service issues encountered more than once.
p.1 #6 · EDU discounts at B&H and item availability
I have purchased new camera gear at both B and H and Adorama using EDU discounts. They are the same items sold in the non EDU package deals, so imagine EDU availability of a stand alone item is some sort of business decision.
How certain retailers provide EDU discounts and others do not is a bit of a mystery. I suppose it has something to do with volume sold.
I would prefer to purchase from my locally owned retailer (which I do for some things), but on big ticket items the EDU discount can be substantial.

I've never seen that. I've purchased most if not all my Sony gear and various other things using the EDU discount through B&H. They've all been unused and in perfect condition as far as I could tell. As zz mentioned I think this is an agreement they have with the manufacturers. I've noticed that "hot" new items won't receive the discount until demand has settled a bit (atleast that's what I speculate). Not sure why the 100-400 is showing this though.
Could give adorama or focus a try. Last time I tried through adorama they required to contact them after placing the order for a price adjustment, not sure if this has changed, which is why I've only done it through B&H.

I actually know this, I've talked with B&H at length about it. EDU gear is a different stock entirely from the regularly priced items. They are the exact same products, don't get me wrong, but the inventory is separate. If you show up in person, there's a possibility they'll help you out if it's slow and you're nice.. I would suggest buying the item, having it in front of you and the associate, and then going "oh hey can I get the edu discount?" They will spend approx 20 minutes going back and forth with management, but the answer will be yes.

I would LOVE to go to B&H "in person". Unfortunately, it would be a very long schlep from where I live
