Has any one tried the Nikon 50mm Z with extender tubes to shoot Macro?
If so, would love to hear what results you were able to get, what extenders you used, how the AF and exposure worked (or didn't)... some samples would be absolute gravy!
Yes, the 50mm 1.8 S seems to work quite well. These shots of fern sporangia (spore casings) were taken with a 15mm Fotodiox Z extension tube, on a tabletop tripod and would have been focused manually in live view at 200% magnification. Auto exposure was fine.
Thanks Slugly! That looks quite sharp and gets you closer than I would have though possible with only a 15mm tube. By my calculation you need about 45mm to get close to 1:1. Have you tried shooting closer to 1:1?

I did a quick test and with 44mm extension I get to 0.84x magnification
With the lens focused at infinity, a 44 mm extension should give M = extension/FL = 44/50 = 0.88, a value in agreement with your finding. If you focus at closer distances (< infinity), M does increase (slightly).
5T & 6T achromatic close-up lenses are good, with same diopters as 3T & 4T, namely 1.5 and 2.9 diopters. However, these close-up lenses/filters are not powerful enough for macro-photography with a 50 mm lens. In fact, they were designed for telephoto lenses (hence the letter T).
Long time ago I published, in my old and never updated website, a table with magnifications attainable using 5T(3T) or 6T(4T) lenses : http://xoomer.virgilio.it/ripolin/3T4T.htm
