I was going to buy a Nikon 24-70 F4S lens - and I saw an open box one for $770 on B&H and am tempted to buy it. It comes with all packaging and full Nikon warranty and by registering you get a 4 year warrant just like a new one. Thats a savings of $240+ over a new one.
Does anyone have any experience buying open box items from B&H? I have bought new equipment form B&H for years and have always bene happy with their products and service. Never bought an open box item from them.
My attitude is if you trust B&H, as you indicate from your "years" of purchasing with them, then you should have no problem returning the item if it doesn't meet your expectations.
That said, I tend to stay away from open boxes being I don't know who did what with the item. That's me. And like you, I've been shopping with B&H for years (without issue). In fact I just (less than two weeks) bought a Nikon 70-200 2.8E FL lens from them.

Never bought open-box, but have purchased many used lenses of 8+ or better and they've generally been as good as advertised. When not satisfied, I've had no problem returning for full refund during the thirty-day returnable period.
Just make certain the 30-day period to return applies for your purchase.
I recently purchased a pre-owned Nikon 200-400/4G VR from them that was listed as a "9" from them without being able to see it and demo it. Upon receiving it from them it was easily in 9+ to mint minus condition and performs flawlessly. I would have no problem purchasing a used piece from them again.
You should be fine with an open box from B&H. There are also
ones that come up on the B&S forum for around $500 if you feel
comfortable with that. They are the standard kit lens and frequently
available. Look for a reputable seller on the forum.
They've been selling for about $400 in the classifieds. I'd get one of those from a seller that is reliable/accepts returns etc.
Or I'd buy an open box w/warranty. No way I'd pay $1K for the kit lens with those options available.
B&H lets you return stuff, and there should be nothing wrong with open box. If the price and buying from them is convenient for you, go for it. I bought a Tamron lens from them used and it was packed well and had no problems.
Keep in mind that Nikon warranties are not transferable. So if you buy any thing from a dealer not authorized by Nikon (and there is a long dealer list available) the warranty is void.
I bought a demo 24-70Z from adorama recently, similar price, and it was actually part of a Z kit. But it had the warranty papers. I’ve registered it with Nikon with no problem.
Unless it’s a really great deal from a non dealer I don’t buy. None warranty repairs by Nikon are very expensive.
Open Box is good deal. It's a kit lens being sold separately in the white box. Same warranty. New lens, maybe shot a handful of times in the store, but probably not so much honestly because of the pandemic.
Maybe, but it could also be a grey market item in which Nikon wont cover. The other is condition of the item - I'm sure the OP could find one 200 dollars cheaper than 700, but what of condition
